It has been reported that Elliot Page will continue to play Vanya Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy after announcing they are trans.

The 33-year-old wrote an emotional statement on Twitter that he was changing his pronouns to he/they and was now called Elliot.

The announcement led fans of the Netflix drama whether Elliot would still play Vanya in the show, with the character being a cisgender woman whose superpower involves unleashing force through sound.

However, Variety has since claimed that Elliot, who starred in hit films Juno and the X-Men series, will continue in The Umbrella Academy, with "no plans" to change the character's gender at this time.

The Umbrella Academy has proven to be one of Netflix's biggest hits, seeing a dysfunctional group of adopted superhero siblings work together in an attempt to stop an oncoming apocalypse.

We've previously been teased with the third series of the show, as showrunner Steve Backman has shared a snap from the script of the first episode of the third season - and it's sure to set the tone of what we can expect when it finally returns.

In Elliot's statement on Twitter, the star asked for "patience" among his fans, and admitted that he felt "scared" to be announcing the news.

"The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared. I'm scared of the invasiveness, the hate, the 'jokes' and of violence.

"To be clear, I am not trying to dampen a moment that is joyous and one that I celebrate, but I want to address the full picture.

"I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive."

He continued: "To all trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better."
