The doc will primarily focus on Michaella, who was arrested in August 2013 - along with her accomplice Melissa Reid - after attempting to smuggle £1.5 million worth of cocaine out of Peru.

Michaella is from Dungannon, Northern Ireland while Melissa is from Glasgow. Just before the incident, Michaella had been working in a nightclub in Ibiza, but travelled to Peru on 15th August before attempting to leave again just two days later with 11kg of cocaine.

It transpired that the drugs had been concealed inside porridge and jelly packets, and that the women had been paid just £4,000 each to smuggle the cocaine - worth around £1.5 million.

Both women were sentenced to seven years in jail.

The five part series will tell the story of Michaella's time in one of the country's most brutal prisons, Ancon 2, how she coped and how she went on to run a pop up beauty salon for her fellow inmates.

The doc will also include unique access to Michaella, as well as her family and friends.

The official synopsis explains: "Aged 19, Michaella McCollum boarded her first ever flight for her first foreign holiday in Ibiza. Just a few weeks later she was arrested at Lima airport in Peru after failing to smuggle more than a million pounds worth of cocaine in her suitcase.

"Told in her own words, McCollum recounts the extraordinary story of how she became infamous worldwide as one half of the Peru Two.

"From how she was recruited as a cartel drugs mule and came to be arrested, tried and jailed in one of the most notorious maximum security prisons in Peru, to the even more extraordinary story of how she got herself out again."
