'Heartbroken’ Sam Smith forced to cancel two more shows after performance was suddenly halted

'Heartbroken’ Sam Smith forced to cancel two more shows after performance was suddenly halted

The singer has been warned that performing too soon could permanently damage their voice

Sam Smith has been forced to cancel two of their rescheduled shows as doctors warn they could do permanent damage to their voice.

Just hours after cancelling their Manchester gig four songs into the performance, Sam has now told fans that they'll have to cancel their upcoming show dates in Birmingham and Glasgow.

Originally Sam had been slated to play Birmingham and Glasgow back in April, but a nasty virus forced them to push the two shows back to May.

Now, fans who have already been let down by the first postponement have been hit once again at the last minute.

In a statement from Sam's concert promoter, shared to the Grammy winner's social media, it was announced that: "Due to vocal issues during last night's Manchester performance, regrettably we will be cancelling the rescheduled Birmingham and Glasgow Sam Smith shows."

The statement continued: "Refunds will be available at point of purchase for all three dates; Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow.

"A spokesperson said 'Doctors have advised due to a vocal cord injury, Sam must have complete vocal rest.'

"Sam is heartbroken to have had to cancel these shows but they have been told by doctors that if they keep singing, they will do permanent damage to their voice. If they take some rest they will be able to perform again."

Needless to say, fans who were gunning to see Sam's Gloria Tour are absolutely devastated but are flooding the heartbroken Grammy winner with well wishes.

"I’m so gutted, rescheduled and then cancelled. I have been excited ever since I got tickets last year," tweeted one disappointed fan.

A second complained: "Been waiting five years to see Sam Smith been rescheduled once and now cancelled. Birthday night as well."

But others have rushed to Sam's defence, arguing that there wasn't much they could have done and wishing the singer a speedy recovery.

"I understand the fans' disappointment and sadness but this is not Sam's fault, please be kind with them. I can't imagine how hard would be for them not to be able to do what they were born to," one person pointed out.

"Please rest and follow doctor's orders. I know you will since you always want to give 100% for us Sailors," encouraged a second.

Sam baffled fans on Wednesday night (24 May) when they halted their performance after singing just four songs at the AO Arena.

Confused ticket-holders presumed there had been a 'power cut' in the arena, but a few minutes later it was announced that the concert would not continue.

Sam later posted a statement to their Instagram to apologise to fans, explaining that they had noticed something wrong with their voice during their third song.

"I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong," Sam wrote.

"I came off stage and have tried everything to get my voice back in gear but it won't.

"I am honestly heartbroken I couldn't finish the show tonight for you all. I love you all. I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry."

While Birmingham and Glasgow are now fully cancelled, there's no word yet on whether or not Manchester will be rescheduled.
