Sam Smith's back-up singer was reportedly spotted 'crying on stage' right before the singer's gig was suddenly cancelled.

The 'Stay With Me Singer' is currently running their highly anticipated Gloria tour, but their show in Manchester was cancelled just a few songs in due to illness.

At the city's AO Arena, the Grammy-winner was forced to cancel just four songs into the gig, leaving excited fans utterly devastated.

Fans were initially left baffled when the concert stopped suddenly mid-way through and Smith left the stage, with the lights suddenly going out with no warning.

For quite a while, fans were literally left in the dark as they tried to figure out what had gone wrong - with many suspecting a potential power cut.

But after a few minutes of confusion, ticket-holders were informed that the concert would not be continuing.

Many fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment at the news, with many wondering what had happened to Smith.

One fan wrote: "Approximately less than 10 minutes before @samsmith cancelled the #Manchester show lastnight. Teasing us with a special surprise performance of their new song. The only surprise we got was the show ending after 4 songs."

While many expressed their concern for Smith, one ticket-holder took to Twitter to explain how they spotted one of the singer's back-up artists crying before all the drama kicked off in Manchester.

"My daughter advises she witnessed one of the singers in the Jumpsuit crying. We hope they are ok we send our love & well wishes," the fan wrote on Twitter.

"We’re devastated for you all as artists having to stop the gig. We look forward to seeing you all in the future. You are all phenomenal xx."

Following the confusion as to why the concert was suddenly cancelled, Sam Smith released a statement explaining how they hasn't felt too well in recent weeks.

Sam issued an apology to fans on Instagram.

Sam wrote: "I don't know what to say honestly. I fought off a virus a few weeks ago and since then we have travelled across Europe and had such incredible shows.

"Today in soundcheck I felt fine and was so excited to give Manchester an amazing show tonight, with a special surprise guest at the end."

They continued: "During my third song, I noticed something wrong with my voice. I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong.

"I came off stage and have tried everything to get my voice back in gear but it won't. I am honestly heartbroken I couldn't finish the show tonight for you all. I love you all. I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry."
