Nick Cannon has left his fans confused after he appeared to announce his engagement on Facebook.

The rapper, 41, posted a photograph of himself with his arms around an unidentified woman's neck and a picture of himself seemingly offering a ring.

He captioned the post: "I said I would never do it again but… Finally doing what the world wants me to do…"

In case your memory needs refreshing, Cannon was previously married to Mariah Carey from 2008 until their divorce was finalised in 2016.

At the time of writing, he currently has eight children with five women and he is expecting his ninth child with Abby De La Rosa later this year, as reported by TMZ.

Fans were left very confused by his engagement announcement as a result.

One wrote: "I don't believe it!! This is definitely for a video or movie!! Just spend some time alone. That is what I believe you should do. Heal whatever is broken inside of you that is making you hop around the world making babies. Praying for Your Healing, Nick!! [sic]"

"Wait until all the other baby mamas see this!!! [sic]" joked a second, while a third questioned: "So, does this mean no more baby momas, or will that continue as a side hustle??? [sic]"

However, a large number of Cannon's fans believed that he was simply marketing a new music video by capitalising on his interesting personal life.

"How to promote the new song you wrote / get the ppl buzzing and paying attention first [sic]," speculated one fan.

A second added: "Spoken like a true baby daddy king lol this better be a promo! [sic]."

Cannon's post comes after he recently said that he will 'never have a love' like Mariah Carey again, who will 'always be my baby'.

He made the revelation just this week on the The Hot Tee Talk Show where he said: "That's my fantasy love. That's somebody I will always love.

"I will never have a love like I had with Mariah. If I had the opportunity, if it could be the way that it was, I'm there."

These comments understandably played into fans' reactions to his engagement announcement.

One wrote: "Wait! I'm lost! He just did an interview saying he would get back with Mariah! Now he's engaged?! Boy some men ain't... Well, y'all know the rest!"

What do you think of Cannon's engagement announcement? One thing is for sure, if his aim was to get people talking, he's been very, very successful!
