Love Island fans are divided by Gemma and Luca's 'hypocritical' announcement

Love Island fans are divided by Gemma and Luca's 'hypocritical' announcement

Love Island fans are remembering the moment when Gemma criticised Davide's way of asking Ekin-Su to be his girlfriend in the villa.

Love Island fans have been left divided by Luca Bish's extravagant method for asking Gemma Owen to be his girlfriend. Watch the footage below:

After finishing the series as runners up without making their relationship official, the fishmonger from Brighton used balloons in a pool arranged to spell 'be my girlfriend' as well as countless roses.

The 23-year-old also gifted his new girlfriend with an expensive Juste Un Clou bracelet. Gemma, 19, looked overwhelmed with the present.

While many fans were left 'sobbing' by the excessive proposal, others were less impressed.

Fans quickly recalled the apparent hypocrisy of the proposal after Gemma called out the way Davide Sanclimenti asked Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu to be exclusive while in the villa.

The self-described ‘Italian snack’, 27, whipped up a tasty homemade tiramisu for the Turkish actress, however Gemma appeared to be less than impressed.

“We don’t need to do something like that for people to know we’re exclusive,” she said at the time about the future winners. “I prefer it this way.”

She added: “It’s different [when it’s boyfriend and girlfriend].”

One commenter on social media replied: “The amount of times they snubbed Ekin-Su and Davide and the other couples in the villa saying, 'WE don’t need to make it a big public thing' yet here they are putting on what looks like an advert for Cartier. Pair of muppets.”

Another Love Island fan reacted similarly to the proposal. “Luca and Gemma were being such haters when Davide made Ekin tiramisu and asked her to be his girlfriend saying they don’t need gestures like that for other [people] to see but now they’re hiring a whole videographer and buying cartier for [Instagram] lol.”

A third person called the newly official couple ‘a bit hypocritical’ and compared the proposal to Davide and Ekin-Su. “I swear Gemma is the same one who got bitter when Davide did the whole tiramisu thing for Ekin to be exclusive, she branded that as too flashy and too much but yet she’s THE ONE who’s getting flashy and too much stuff, a bit hypocritical of her like just BE REAL.”

Other fans, however, were delighted with the flashy display of affection and took to the comments to share their love for the couple.

"Omg this is sooooo cute Congrulationsss guysss [sic],” said on overjoyed Instagram user.

"Okay crying," added a second while a second person wrote: "That’s absolutely beautiful. Well done Luca."

Luca’s girlfriend proposal comes after he addressed his behaviour towards Gemma in the villa following backlash from the public.

During Movie Night – where the contestants had their relationship put to the test by watching video footage from Casa Amor – Luca appeared to be upset about Gemma’s apparent ‘flirting’ with Billy, 23, despite them not being in an official relationship.

Speaking to Grazia this month, Luca said: “She’s a strong woman so she would never let herself be in a situation like that. "However, a lot of those moments where I lost it came at the end of the show and by that point, my emotions and everything – I was drained of it all.”

He claimed he apologised and commented further on the situation with Billy.

“She’s a strong woman so she would never let herself be in a situation like that. "However, a lot of those moments where I lost it came at the end of the show and by that point, my emotions and everything – I was drained of it all.”
