Hannah Waddingham praised for being the star of Eurovision in new presenting role

The Ted Lasso actor has been presenting Eurovision for the first time and fans have labelled her an 'icon'

Hannah Waddingham has stolen the hearts of the nation in her debut Eurovision Song Contest presenting appearance.

Waddingham is best known for playing the charming Rebecca Welton in Apple TV’s comedy-drama series, Ted Lasso.

However, this evening (13 May), she’s swapped the fictional Nelson Road ground for Liverpool’s M&S Arena, as she’s been cast in hosting duties for this year’s Eurovision.

The singing competition is one of the biggest evenings in the musical calendar, with 26 countries competing for the crown and a chance to host the event in their own country.

Liverpool was announced to be hosting the event as the winners, Ukraine, were unable to due to the ongoing war with Russia.

While there have been stunning performances from the likes of UK's Mae Muller and Sweden’s Loreen, viewers believe that Waddingham has claimed the show as her own.

While this isn’t the actor’s first time presenting (she introduced Liverpudlian actor Jodie Comer at the Olivier Awards last month) it is her first time presenting a singing competition.

Fans are obsessed with Ted Lasso's Hannah Waddingham.

At the time of the Olivier Awards, she joked: “I would happily star in a remake of Killing Eve, you can just call it ‘Killing Waddingham’ because I’d happily be mauled to death by you.”

This evening, however, she further proved that she has a career in presenting by taking up the limelight tonight.

From surprising viewers with her fluent French speaking skills to her stunning quick-change ability, the actor has also been caught jiving to this year’s entries and even did a rousing segment with Giedroyc.

And it’s fair to say then that the public has simply fallen head-over-heels in love with her.

One fan tweeted: “So we’re all in agreement that Hannah Waddingham needs to host Eurovision every year, right?"

While another said: “Hannah Waddingham has served personality, charm and body-ody-ody all throughout Eurovision.”

A third agreed and wrote: “Hannah Waddingham hasn’t just understood the assignment, she IS the assignment, She is Eurovision personified, whoever suggested her for this [presenting gig] needs to be knighted.”

And one celebrity who has also jumped at the opportunity to heap praise on Waddingham is TV personality Carol Vorderman.

Viewers think that the actor stole the spotlight.

The Countdown alumni took to Twitter and wrote: “Can I just vote for Hannah Waddingham to be on everything on the telly at all times please? Utter Goddess.”

And bizarrely, Innocent Drinks have also got behind the presenter, scoring her ’12 points’ in a mock Eurovision-style televoting system.

As well as stealing the show, 48-year-old is currently starring in the third season of Ted Lasso.

But where else could we see her appearing?

Well, one fan believes that she should star alongside co-host Graham Norton in a comedy film.

They wrote: “Hear me out: Hannah Waddingham and Graham Norton in a comedy with the feel of the 2000s”.

Now that’s something we’re definitely not against!
