People Are Saying Love Actually Is Actually A 'Tragedy'

Do you think so?

We often associate Christmas film, Love Actually, with being a happy, upbeat festive movie. But many people believe the iconic film is actually a tragedy.

Discussing the movie on Netflix podcast, 10/10 Would Recommend, hosts Tolani Shoneye and Gena-mour Barrett explain why they think the film is actually pretty tragic.

You can watch a clip of them discussing below:

In the podcast, Tolani explains: "So many sad things happen in that film. Emma Thompson goes into a room and she's like looking for Christmas presents right? Or she finds a Christmas present.

"And she opens it and it's a beautiful diamond necklace or whatever and she assumes that it's for her. So Christmas morning comes now and Emma thinks she's about to open a diamond necklace.

"She thought her good loving husband gave her a diamond necklace. But he did not."

The hosts then went on to recall how Emma Thompson's character, Karen, opens her present on Christmas Day to find out her husband Harry (played by Alan Rickman) had bought her a CD, and the necklace was in fact for someone else - Harry's work colleague.

And other viewers agreed the film is a tragedy, with one writing: "I’ve always considered it a desperately sad and depressing film, punctuated by snippets of heartwarming joy. On balance though, it’s dark."

While another said: "Reminder: 'Love, Actually' is a tragedy."

And a third added: "I feel I want to put it out into the universe, love actually is a horribly sad film there is nothing romantic about telling your best friend's wife you love her it's selfcentered/awful.

"Emma Thompson's characters face when she finds her husband is having an affair heartbreaking."

Another said: "Love, actually is not a Christmas movie it’s just a sad film set during the holidays."
