Inventing Anna Fan Explains The Reason For Her Hybrid Accent

If you're one of the many people who started binge-watching Inventing Anna on Netflix over the weekend, you've definitely noticed the lead character's rather bizarre accent.

The gripping drama tells the true story of Anna Delvey (or Anna Sorokin) - an Insta-famous Russian-German heiress who stole the hearts of the New York social scene - and their money too.

Anna Delvey is played by American actress Julia Garner, and while some can't see past her bizarre accent, others insist that her portrayal of the con-woman is spot-on.

One irritated viewer who started the series this week tweeted: "I need this actress playing Anna to pick [an] accent and stick with one! #InventingAnna"

Another added: "Is Anna Delvey Australian or German or Russian or what is happening with her accent."

"I can't for the life of me get past this god awful accent," wrote a third.

But those who are familiar with the true story of Anna Delvey explained that Julia Garner's accent is perfect.

One confused viewer asked about the accent on Facebook, asking: "I can't stand the accent in Inventing Anna... What is her accent supposed to be?"

A well-informed fan answered: "The accent is exactly how the real Anna speaks."

Another posted: "Let's understand. Inventing Anna... her character's voice/accent is international. She is a Russian trying to sound German. If you follow the story, you understand this... The [actor] portraying her did an amazing job."

One wrote: "I need y'all to understand Anna accent is the way it is because she is faking being German when she is Russian 😭 please look up an interview of Anna.. the actress literally sounds the same #InventingAnna."

Another tweeted: "Screaming cause people genuinely upset about the accent when it’s dead on with how Anna actually spoke 🤣🤣🤣 #InventingAnna"

Julia Garner herself has spoken about Anna's unusual accent.

The actress recently told the Associated Press: "The accent is somebody that's trying to be what she's not.

"She's born in Russia but she lies to people that she's German, so she's not going to have a Russian accent if people are convinced that she's German...

"But then she probably learned English like a British person because she's European... but then she came here and her accent got musically American. She still has a European accent but the delivery is American."

All we'll say is that Anna Delvey's accent is definitely memorable.
