The Sun reported that the star will leave his role permanently later this year in a big storyline.

Quoting an unnamed source, the publication reported: “Chris has decided to take an extended break from the soap.

“He loves working at Coronation Street but he’s got a lot of things he wants to do wand the time is right for him to take a break and pursuer other roles.”

Fear not, Coronation Street fans as it appears he won’t be killed off if the reports of him leaving are true.

The source continued: “It isn’t a final goodbye and the door is very much being left open.

“Obviously fans will be devastated but there’s a good few months of huge drama yet before he bids farewell to the cobbles.”

Chris Gascoyne will be on screen for the remainder of the year.

The Sun reported that Gascoyne’s break is indefinite and no date has been set for his possible return as Peter in the future.

When contacted by Tyla for comment, a spokesperson for ITV said Gascoyne is taking an extended break as he has done before and although no date has been set for his return, he will be on screen for the rest of the year and the door will be left open for his return.

Gascoyne recently shared an excited career update with fans which will see him in a brand new role you’re sure to know.

An announcement was shared by The Alban Arena confirming that the actor will play Captain Hook in a Peter Pan pantomime later this year.

The post read: “EXCITING PANTO NEWS. The Alban Arena are delighted to announce Coronation Street Legend Chris Gascoyne will star as Captain Hook in The All New Adventures of Peter Pan this pantomime season!

“Chris Gascoyne is famous for his role as Peter Barlow in Britain’s top soap, Coronation Street (ITV) in which he has led numerous high profile storylines to great acclaim.

“This promises to be our most spectacular pantomime yet with stunning sets, dazzling costumes, and a star-studded cast, this is a must-see show for the whole family. Don't miss your chance to experience the wonder and excitement of Neverland once more in Paul Hendy's pantomime sequel!”
