After being immersed in the second season of the ever-steamy series of Bridgerton, fans have wrapped their head around the upcoming third season storyline - and they don’t seem to be too happy about it.

Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington - and the secret character Lady Whistledown - has previously revealed that Penelope and Colin Bridgerton may get involved in a romantic storyline of their own in the next series.

Confirming the future plot and discussing future plans for the series at Netflix’s FYSEE Space, Nicola said: “Like Lady Whistledown, I have been keeping a secret for quite some time and I can confirm to you all that Season 3 is Colin and Penelope’s love story.

“I have kept that secret since two weeks into Season 2. This is the first time I am saying it here.”

However, the plans for the upcoming series and their blossoming relationship have been met with some backlash from fans, who are upset at the way things ended between friends Penelope and Eloise Bridgerton.

Taking to Twitter, one very passionate fan of the show raged: “No. @netflix You changed the story to make Penelope ruin her friend to save her own a** —now you want us to root for her love story a season early? No. She needs to spend season 3 on a redemption arc with Eloise before fans can back her again. Give us Book 3/Benedict & Sophie.”

The fan explained how if the show followed the book series, the third series would capture Benedict’s relationship with a woman called Sophie.

However, the on-screen adaptation will not be following the book’s chronology and appears to instead be centring around the fourth book, Romancing Mr Bridgerton.

“With subplots of Penelope trying to make amends with Eloise—maybe she enlists Colin to help her and we see them get closer through that—and subplots of Kate & Anthony,” the Twitter user continued. “Maybe have Francesca be out in society and engaged to the Earl of Kilmartin.”

Others disagreed with the sharp plot twist, with someone else penning: “Not only has Penelope ruined Eloise but she has hurt the Bridgertons several times.

"She created a situation where Daphne was almost married off to a creep and she did not handle the Collin Marina situation well. She has been wholly self-interested from the beginning of the show.”

"How are you going to choose her over your sister who was wronged? (Netflix)."

“I am so sad they took the sweetness of book ‘Polin’ away…I just can't see Colin forgiving Pen so easily. It was supposed to be friends to lovers, not hate to lovers,” another agreed.

Someone else added: “Tbh it's going to look real weird if Colin sides with/dates Penelope if she’s still at odds with Eloise. How are you going to choose her over your sister who was wronged?”

A representative of Netflix and Bridgerton have declined to comment when approached by Tyla.

A release date has not been confirmed for season 3, but we'll let you know as soon as we have an update.
