Travel expert warns you should think twice before wearing leggings on a plane

Flying can be uncomfortable, but you might have to suffer if you don't want to get hurt

Comfort is of the utmost importance when travelling, but before you think about hopping into your leggings, an expert has warned against it.

Okay, so leggings might be one of the most comfortable garments a person could ever wear, and it totally makes sense that you’d want to wear them while crammed on a plane for however many hours - but wait.

According to an aviation expert, they’re incredibly dangerous.

I was going to let you sit on that for a second, but it’s sage to say that it’s confusing enough to work out how stretchy leggings can be anything other than helpful in any situation.

So, let’s get into it.

Christine Negroni released a book on mysterious flight disasters and shared that leggings could prove to either kill you or leave lasting damage in the event of an emergency.

She told The Sun: "You might have to escape through a cabin fire or there could be a separate fire on the ground once you leave the aircraft.

"Everyone is wearing yoga pants on planes now, but I avoid all artificial fibres because they are more likely to burn and stick to you if there is a fire.

"I’d advise wearing cotton clothes or anything made of natural fibres."

However, she’s not done with scaring you away from your favourite style choices, as she also has a reason why you should retrain from going shoeless while up in the air too.

Sure, taking your shoes off is gross, but if you’ve been wearing structured shoes for hours on end, you’d do anything to stretch your toes out.

Christine revealed: "One of the best things people can do is put their shoes on for take-off and landing. This is still not required by many airlines and I think it ought to be.

"If you escape an aircraft, the floor could be very hot or cold, it might be covered in oil or on fire, or in a cornfield – you won’t want to be barefoot.

"Mainly err on the side of caution. Pick sneakers over high heels, pick natural fibres over synthetic, and take tight-fitting clothes over loose-fitting."

Well… when she puts it like that…

Anyway, the type of shoes you wear are important too, and you should probably opt for sturdy trainers so that you can tackle any situation, as well as cotton jeans instead of leggings as they’re a lot more protective.

According to flight attendant Andrea Fischbach, you should leave all clothing that restricts you in your case while you fly - and anything that’s heavy needs to go too.

Just don’t expect them to help you with said bag.

She told WhoWhatWear: "It's very important to be able to move around a bit in your seat—very difficult, I know—and keep your blood flowing.”

She went on to say that ‘if you are tall, travel a lot, or are on a long flight, this is extremely important because you face the risk of developing DVT’ which is a Deep Vein Thrombosis blood clot which can be fatal.

But it’s not just DVT to worry about.

She explained: "Bloating is a major issue, even for flight attendants, so wear something comfortable around your waist like elastic."
