Prince Harry reunites with King Charles for the first time in over a year

The King of England and Duke of Sussex met for a private tea on Wednesday (10 September)

Prince Harry reunited with his dad King Charles III for the first time in 19 months, as he joined him for a private tea at Clarence House on Wednesday (10 September).

For those who aren't up to speed on why this is important, the Duke of Sussex has had a somewhat rocky relationship with his closest family members since he and wife, Meghan Markle, stepped down from their royal duties and moved to California in 2020.

The couple's reasoning behind the move was that they wanted space to raise their son, Prince Archie, now six, and their daughter Princess Lilibet, who is now four years old, was born there shortly after in 2021.

Harry and Meghan also famously made headlines as on multiple occasions they spoke up about their alleged mistreatment of the Suits star, by other royals.

The Duke's bombshell memoir, Spare, got into some of the shocking claims, as well as a Netflix doc, Harry & Meghan, where they recalled instances of alleged bullying.

However, it now seems that Harry's relationship with his family could be on the mend, following his catch-up with the King.

The pair’s long-awaited meeting took place just before Harry headed to meet corporate sponsors and government ministers at an Invictus reception at The Gherkin in London on Wednesday evening.

His face-to-face chat with his dad lasted 54 minutes, arriving in a black Range Rover at 5.20pm and leaving at 6.14pm.

Buckingham Palace confirmed Harry joined Charles for tea - marking the first time the father and son have seen each other since February 2024, when he travelled to the UK to see the king after his cancer diagnosis.

And it seems that the chat went well, as Harry was asked how his father was by a reporter shortly after arriving at the Invictus reception, and he seemed to be in good spirits as he replied: “Yes he’s great, thank you.”

The meeting comes after the Duke publicly expressed hopes of a reconciliation with his family in May.

He told the BBC that he didn’t want to fight with them anymore and would 'love reconciliation' despite there being 'so many disagreements' over the years.

He admitted to the outlet: "There's no point continuing to fight any more, life is precious. I don’t know how much longer my father has.

"You know, he won’t speak to me because of this security stuff. But it would be nice to - it would be nice to reconcile."

But, one person it appears that Harry is yet to make amends with, is his brother Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton.

Harry reportedly remains estranged from the Prince of Wales, who has been keeping busy with a slew of engagements this week.

While the meeting was going on, William was away in Cardiff on Wednesday visiting a new mental health hub on World Suicide Prevention Day.

The visit also coincided with the third anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's death on 8 September, when Harry was spotted laying flowers at his grandmother's tomb in the King George VI Memorial Chapel within Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel.

Harry's four-day long trip is set to come to an end today (11 September), with the Duke set to fly back to California after rounding off the visit by visiting a charity set up in memory of his mother.

He's expected to carry out a final engagement with the Diana Award in London before travelling back to Meghan and his kids.
