A royal commentator has claimed the Duchess of Sussex sent her father-in-law, King Charles III, a secret message in the form of her new self-fronted Netflix series.

With Love, Meghan landed on the streaming service last week (4 March) following mass anticipation, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at her California lifestyle as a wife, mother-of-two, and accommodating dinner party host.

One aspect of the eight-part series immediately caught the attention of viewers as she revealed she doesn't actually go by her most recognisable name anymore.

The scene in question sees Meghan, 43, hosting celebrity gal pal Mindy Kaling at a beautiful home, during which The Office actress refers to her as 'Meghan Markle'.

Discussing their favourite fast-food takeaways, Kaling responded: "I don't think anyone in the world knows that Meghan Markle has eaten Jack In The Box and loves it."

The former Suits actress then corrected her, admitting she found it 'funny' that people still call her by her old name.

"It's so funny you keep saying Meghan Markle, you know I'm Sussex now," Meghan pointed out.

"You have kids and you go 'No, I share my name with my children'."

She continued: "I didn't know how meaningful it would be to me but it just means so much to go 'This is OUR family name. Our little family name'."

The on-screen moment sparked confusion among some viewers - including royal biographer Angela Levin, who appeared on GB News last week, where she considered whether Meghan's new demand was directed at King Charles.

"The feeling, general feeling is that she's doing that to say to the royal family that you try and take away my titles and you'll be in trouble," Levin told listeners.

"Because otherwise, what on earth could she be doing? She made countless mistakes.

"I won't say what it was made of, but it was actually dangerous. And because she didn't measure it properly, it could burn your body."

The royal commentator also pointed out that, on a separate note, Meghan's correction of her friend was apparently inappropriately timed.

"Very complicated," Levin assessed of the moment.

"I think it's extraordinary that someone should have this arrangement of all these cooking things, and then a friend comes in and you give her a whacking telling off because she calls you Meghan Markle."

She continued: "Instead, she said that her name is no longer that she's got a proper name that she's had for a long time.

"She should have talked to her like that. I mean, it sort of knocks you for six because she's trying to be nice and invite people to enjoy themselves, and she whacks them."

Tyla has contacted Meghan Markle's representatives for comment.
