Meghan Markle appears to make major mistake with new Instagram account that’s sparked divorce rumours

The Duchess of Sussex returned to social media yesterday (1 Jan) after four years offline

Following her shock return to social media, some of Meghan Markle's followers believe a 'clue' on her new profile alludes to the fact that she and Prince Harry have secretly divorced.

And though neither of the Sussexes have confirmed such a speculation, new online theories have sent the rumour mill into overdrive.

As we say, Meghan kicked off her 2025 by returning to social media for the first time in four years.

In 2021 - three years after their wedding - both she and husband Prince Harry took down their profiles, with Elle Magazine claiming at the time that they'd grown tired of the onslaught of criticism they were often subjected to following their departure from the UK to the US.

Yesterday, however - over a year since an account with the Instagram handle @meghan - was set up, the Duchess shared her first video.

The clip saw the mother-of-two running barefoot on the beach, before she writes the numbers '2025' in the sand.

Naturally, Meghan's return to the photo-sharing app has meant that she'd accumulated millions of new followers - some of whom have been left perplexed by her online title.

As any Instagram users will know, as well as getting a handle, so @tyla.official, you also get a title that appears at the top of your page when someone clicks onto you.

This can be whatever you want it to be - so, for us, it's just 'Tyla'.

For the former Suits actress, it's 'Meghan, Duchess of Sussex'.

And while this might seen like a totally valid title for her, history tells us that omitting the word 'The' ahead of 'Duchess of Sussex' could hit at marital strains behind the scenes - something only a handful of followers have picked up on.

Taking to X, one follower noted: "So Meghan is back on Instagram under her own name. To start with it was just 'Meghan' but now 'Duchess of Sussex' has been added....

"BUT did any of you notice...The is missing from her title...In other words she is sharing a title of a divorced 'Duchess' That THE is very important."

'But how could three little letters be of such significance?', I hear you ask.

Well, it turns out that, when a member of the Royal Family gets divorced, they lose the 'The' from their full title, and instead, they gain something known as a 'Courtesy Title'.

Such was the case when Princess Diana divorced King Charles - she went from 'Diana, The Princess of Wales' to just 'Diana, Princess of Wales' in all official documents and proceedings.

And while the title being shown on Meghan's account may simply be an oversight on the part of her team, it hasn't stopped divorce rumours from circling.

"Meghan’s Instagram has already had an update, changing her name in the profile from 'Meghan' to 'Meghan, Duchess of Sussex'," another wrote online.

"Hopefully we will see another update, as she left out the 'The' in her title. No 'The' before Duchess of Sussex means she is a divorcee."

Another added: "Interesting! She does have a tendency to not use the title correctly by including the 'The' in 'Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex.' Is it in preparation for a divorce?"

"She’s already styled herself a divorcee," a third speculated. "Meghan, Duchess of Sussex is the divorced style."

Tyla has contacted The Royal Family and Meghan's representatives for comment.
