The USA women's hockey team have reportedly made a ruthless move after declining Donald Trump's invitation to celebrate following his controversial 'sexist' comment.

But, before we get into that, we'll catch you up for those who aren't up to date with what happened. In case you missed it, the men's USA ice hockey team defeated Olympic favourites Canada 2-1 to earn a gold medal on Sunday (22 February).

Following their victory, footage emerged of a post-match locker room call with the US President, 79, who personally telephoned them to invite them to Tuesday night’s (24 February) State of the Union address in Washington, DC, as guests of honour.

The footage, which has since circulated far and wide on social media, shows the Republican leader telling the excited group of men: "We’re giving the State of the Union speech on Tuesday night. I could send a military plane or something, if you would like to. It’s the coolest night. It’s the biggest speech."

After the group confirmed they're in, Trump's tone appears to change as he brought up the women's victory, saying: "And we have to - I must tell you - we’re going to have to bring the women’s team. [If I don’t] do that, I do believe I probably would be impeached, OK?" which prompted laughter from the group.

For context, the American women beat Canada 2-1 in their own gold medal game on Thursday (19 February).

Understandably, the comment has prompted widespread backlash, with many people 'disgusted' over Trump's remarks and the men's team's silence on his 'misogynistic' comments, though team member Jack Hughes has since defended the team's reaction.

Shortly after, a spokesperson for the women's team told NBC that, due to 'timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments,' they would be declining Trump's offer.

However, the team has reportedly now accepted an offer from none other than rap legend Flavor Flav, who'd previously offered them a 'real celebration and invite' as he'd 'host them in Las Vegas'.

In the Instagram comments section of an ESPN post about the team declining Trump's invite, he wrote: "But they accepted my invitation to celebrate in Las Vegas."

This hasn't been confirmed by the women's team, however.

In an email screengrab which was shared to social media, the rapper's management told the team: "I am reaching out on behalf of Flavor Flav. First, massive congratulations on the gold!!

"We saw the story about the men’s invite to the White House, and the not-quite invite for the women’s team. Flav recently posted on social media an idea and invite for the women’s hockey team to Las Vegas for a real celebration. He always stands behind everything he says and does."

The invite continued: "If there is an interest for the team to come to Las Vegas and celebrate with Flav - we will figure it out on our end and make it a lovely experience."

Tyla has contacted a rep for the US women's hockey team for comment.
