Donald Trump has just revealed the seriously odd reason why he wants to end the war between Ukraine and Russia.

In a clip which has since been plastered all over social media, the 79-year-old Republican could be seen speaking with Fox and Friends just one day after hosting European leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, at the White House on Monday (18 August).

During the press conference, Trump not so subtly hinted that helping end the war in Ukraine following the Russian invasion over three years ago in February 2022 could also benefit him - an admission which is pretty interesting considering that bringing about a ceasefire and saving countless lives moving forward should be enough of a motivation to do so - opposed to further your own believed self-gain.

"If I can save 7,000 people a week from being killed, I think that’s pretty - I want to try to get to heaven if possible, I’m hearing that I’m not doing well. I am really at the bottom of the totem pole," Trump joked.

He added: "But if I can get to heaven, this will be one of the reasons."

His remarks have raised many eyebrows online with one person writing: "Get to heaven?"

"Did he really say that???" hit out a second, while a third quipped: "I truly didn't think he was capable of this much self-reflection."

Trump's latest comments come just a few days after his high-stakes meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday (15 August) in Anchorage, Alaska.

Trump claimed that he and Putin had an 'extremely productive meeting,' yet he was ultimately unable to get Putin to agree to a ceasefire.

After their meeting, the pair announced that no deal had been reached, with the word 'ceasefire' not at all mentioned by either party. Despite this, Trump insisted the two sides had made 'some great progress'.

"We had an extremely productive meeting and many points were agreed to; there are just a very few that are left," Trump later said in a news conference. "We didn’t get there, but we have a very good chance of getting there."

Putin also praised Trump for the 'friendly' meeting, and for 'understanding that Russia has its own national interests'.

Following the summit, Trump was slammed after making US troops do a 'humiliating act' for Putin during the Trump-Putin summit and was later called out for behaving in a 'nauseatingly embarrassing' way in front of the European leaders on Monday's meeting.
