How Trump’s ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ will negatively impact most Americans after congress officially passes it

The highly controversial legislation was passed on Thursday (3 July)

United States President Donald Trump's 'One Big, Beautiful Bill' has just cleared the House by a razor‑thin 218–214 margin, all set for his signing today (4 July).

While many MAGA heads will be thrilled by the major big tax breaks, big defence, and big border changes - it's clear many will be seriously concerned about the bill given that its passing has come at a serious cost to social safety nets and the national debt.

But actually, in simple terms, the main question surrounding Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill' is how will it impact people's pockets, safety nets, the border, the military, the climate, debt and - interestingly - trans rights?

Well, let's get into all you need to know about how the newly passed legislation, which got passed on Thursday (3 July), will negatively impact most Americans in the US.

Tax cuts for the wealthy

The bill sees a mammoth $4.5 trillion extension of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, which means some very hefty savings for wealthy Americans and businesses and some benefits for middle-income earners too.

There are also tax deductions for tips and overtime, meaning you might save more if you're working in service or hourly jobs.

Older Americans earning under $75k will also get more tax deductions with a $6k boost.

Cuts to Medicaid and SNAP

Over $1 trillion has been cut from Medicaid.

Additionally, new work requirements for food stamps and healthcare could see up to 12 million lose health coverage by 2034.

While critics say it's a war on the vulnerable, MAGA heads claim it’s 'incentivising work'.

ICE and mass deportation boost

More than $45 billion is set to be used for 'infrastructure' - AKA fencing - while $100 billion will be pumped into ICE, plus funding for deportations and detention centres.

Push against the 'Green New Deal'

Raising the debt ceiling

The bill adds trillions to national debt, as it could raise it by $3 to 4 trillion over the next decade, according to budget experts who say it's a short-term win with a long-term hangover.

'Golden Dome' and defence spending

An extra $150 billion will go on military projects like the 'Golden Dome' system.

Trans rights

Language that would’ve banned Medicaid covering gender‑affirming care for minors got stripped at the last minute.

Speaking of the bill - which was narrowly passed with a 218-214 vote - Trump claimed: "It’s going to make this country into a rocket ship. It’s going to be really great."
