Calls to remove United States President Donald Trump from office are gaining traction after House Democrats introduced a bill to trigger a review under the 25th Amendment, citing growing concern over his rhetoric surrounding Iran.
The proposed legislation, backed by 50 Democratic co-sponsors, would establish a 17-member commission of former senior officials appointed by leaders of both parties.
Its remit includes assessing whether the president is 'mentally or physically unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office', with the option of ordering a medical examination.
Nearly 100 Democrats had already pushed for Trump’s removal last week, following threats to destroy Iranian civilisation.
"A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?," Trump wrote on Truth Social last week (7 April).

Rep. Jamie Raskin, who introduced the bill, said: "Public trust in Donald Trump’s ability to meet the duties of his office has dropped to unprecedented lows as he threatens to destroy entire civilizations, unleashes chaos in the Middle East while violating Congressional war powers, aggressively insults the Pope of the Catholic Church and sends out artistic renderings online likening himself to Jesus Christ.
"We are at a dangerous precipice, and it is now a matter of national security for Congress to fulfil its responsibilities under the 25th Amendment to protect the American people from an increasingly volatile and unstable situation."
Raskin also called for a full cognitive assessment, claiming Trump 'has been exhibiting signs consistent with dementia and cognitive decline'.
Right-wing figures, including Alex Jones, Candace Owens and Marjorie Taylor Greene, have also called for Trump’s removal.
The White House has responded to the proposed legislation (Pool / Pool / Getty Images) It's important to note, however, that any move under the 25th Amendment would require the vice president’s backing, an unlikely scenario given JD Vance’s alignment with Trump.
The White House has since dismissed the effort, with spokesman Davis Ingle saying in a statement to The Independent: "Lightweight Jamie Raskin is a stupid person’s idea of a smart person.
"President Trump’s sharpness, unmatched energy, and historic accessibility stand in stark contrast to what we saw during the last administration when Democrats like Raskin intentionally covered up Joe Biden’s serious mental and physical decline from the American people."
