NATO chief makes worrying promise about Middle East conflict after issuing threat in leaked texts to Trump

Mark Rutte, the chief of NATO, today issued a passionate statement on the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict and heaped praise onto Donald Trump for the part he played over the weekend.

His comments come a day after the US President leaked a series of screenshots of his text messages with the Secretary-General, in which Rutte congratulated the 79-year-old for his 'action in Iran' in dropping bombs on three nuclear bases over the weekend.

Rutte, 57, also told the Republican that he would achieve something 'NO American President in decades could get done,' before worryingly claiming 'Europe is going to pay in a BIG way'.

He also seemed to praise Trump for the ceasefire he attempted to put into place between Iran and Israel earlier this week - even though Trump went on to condemn both parties for subsequently violating it with further missile attacks.

"It makes us all safer," Rutte added. "You are flying into another big success in The Hague this evening. It was not easy but we’ve got them all signed onto 5 percent!"

And whilst one might have initially suspected such vocal support of Trump's actions would be deemed quite controversial, Rutte later followed up his gushy message with a similar in-person testimony.

Speaking in The Hague before 32 world leaders - including Trump - Rutte began by stating with 'absolute clarity' that 'the United States is totally committed to NATO, totally committed to Article 5'.

This policy refers to the notion that, an attack on one member of NATO, is an attack on all.

Trump had previously avoided expressing endorsement for Article 5, as he told reporters on Air Force One that there were 'numerous definitions' of the policy, and that he'd 'give you an exact definition when I get there', according to Sky News.

"And yes, there is also an expectation, which will be fulfilled today, that the Canadians and the Europeans will speed up their spending, making sure that we are able to defend ourselves against the Russians and others," Rutte continued before going on to discuss how the group's alliance will change going forward.

"We will take historic, transformational decisions to make our people safer through a stronger, fairer and more lethal NATO," he continued. "To make NATO stronger, we have a concrete plan for all allies to spend five per cent of GDP on defence. This decision is deeply rooted in our core mission and is required to resource our plans and readiness.

"This will also make NATO fairer to ensure anyone and everyone contributes their fair share for our security. For too long, one ally, the United States, carried too much of the burden of that commitment.

"And that changes today."

Rutte went on to address President Trump directly, referring to him as 'dear Donald', adding: "You made this change possible.

"Your leadership on this has already one trillion dollars in extra spending from European allies since 2016, and the decisions today will produce trillions more for our common defence to make a stronger and fairer by equalised spending between America and American's allies.

"Allies will also agree to further increase defence production so that our armed forces have everything they need. That means a huge expansion of our defence on both sides of the Atlantic.

"That's good for our security, it's good for our economy, it's good for our jobs. Our decisions include continuing our support to Ukraine, whilst also pushing for a just and lasting peace. We all want the bloodshed to stop.

"We call on Russia to end its aggression against Ukraine."
