Former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, has shared her opinions on MAGA supporters in a brand-new podcast interview.

Obama made an appearance on the Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso podcast earlier this week (18 May), where she pushed back on generalisations when it comes to those part of US President Donald Trump's Make America Great Again movement.

The 'MAGA' slogan was popularised during Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. Today, the term describes Americans who enthusiastically support Trump and his right-wing policies.

During the podcast, the 62-year-old attorney, who served as First Lady of the US from 2009 to 2017 as the wife of Barack Obama, the 44th president of the US, revealed she was 'deeply, deeply disappointed' by the 2024 election results but theorised that the outcome 'had as much to do with people's pain and confusion about where they are in their lives.'

"Many of the people who voted for my husband twice," Obama continued. "And I know that that's how they feel. It's like, this isn't about anything other than just, we need something different."

She went on to caution against using blanket statements, urging: "You can't just pigeonhole them and say 'you just don't care' and 'you're racist' or whatever you're thinking.

"This is an act of 'I don't know what else to do'."

Detailing how economic and financial issues influence a voter's political stance, Obama noted that when people 'don't have a chance,' it 'makes you angry, and it makes you susceptible to find someone to blame.'

Stating the importance of future leaders prioritising the middle class, the mum-of-two added: "It's not me anymore, but I know those folks, and they're good people, and they don't have a way out, and that makes for bad choices."

Fans have since rushed to social media to praise Obama for her comments, with one YouTube user writing: "I'm so grateful that she continues to be a public presence for us all. Especially considering the current political climate. Thank you, thank you for reminding us of the ethical and moral centres that make this whole human thing work."

A second chimed in: "I think this is the best interview of Michelle Obama that I have ever seen."

"Another intelligent conversation. Great interview. Michelle Obama will always be inspiring," gushed another.

And a final fan echoed: "Thank you. Such a great conversation. Poignant, insightful and empathetic."
