People spot Melania’s reaction to Donald’s ‘inappropriate’ comment about another woman

People have rushed to social media to call out Trump's comments made at the White House’s Congressional Ball on Thursday (11 December)

People have been quick to spot Melania Trump's reaction to her husband Donald Trump's 'inappropriate' comment about another woman.

On Thursday (11 December), the 79-year-old Republican paid a compliment to the wife of fellow Republican Representative Steve Scalise, for crying when the lawmaker was in critical condition after being shot.

Scalise, who is now in his ninth term in the House, survived the shooting at a congressional softball game practice back in 2017.

During the speech at the White House’s Congressional Ball, which saw 55-year-old Melania standing to the left of the podium, Trump then claimed to know many spouses who would react differently.

"I went to the hospital, and they actually thought he wasn’t going to make it," Trump said. "His wife was devastated. She was crying. I tell the story. I found out that night you have a wife that loves you dearly."

He then jabbed: "I know many wives who would not even be crying."

Melania maintained a straight face during the joke as Trump added: "Your wife was absolutely a mess. She was crying, she was inconsolable, Steve."

Such a line sparked a chorus of laughs in the crowd, but people on social media didn't seem to find the remark all to amusing.

"Look at Melania’s face!" penned one X user. "She appears to be stone-faced as Donald Trump talks about how sad Steve Scalise's wife was when he was shot, but he 'knows many wives who would not even be crying'."

A second slammed: "She is always stone-faced."

"Melania’s face said it all: sometimes silence is the loudest commentary in the room," commented a third, while a fourth chimed in: "WTF!"

Another stated: "I really think we should stop trying to make sense of anything this man says."

Body language expert Judi James has since weighed in on the First Lady's reaction, claiming there was a simple reason for Melania's emotionless expression.

"As he gets to the gag about knowing 'many wives who would not even be crying', he puts his own wife into a body language conundrum," Judi told The Mirror US.

"Melania's face straightens to a classic poker face here," the expert added before suggesting it was a clever tactic to avoid speculation about what she really thought of the president's remarks.

"There's no appropriate alternative expression she could pull here, really, so a blank canvas is probably ideal," Judi explained. "If she laughs at his joke, the moment might be seen as one of personal recognition and agreement, and if she scowls, the theorists will be claiming it's a look of annoyance aimed at her husband."

However, she added: "The only trouble with a poker face is that people will tend to project any narrative they want onto it, but given the circumstances and the meme-potential here, it looks like the best option."
