Melania Trump once opened up about the night she first met the man who would end up becoming her husband, Donald Trump.

That fateful encounter took place at the Kit Kat Klub in New York City during Fashion Week back in 1998.

At the time, Trump, 78, was newly separated from his second wife, Marla Maples, while Slovenian-born model Melania, 55, had recently moved to the States to pursue her career.

Speaking in a 2016 interview with Harper's Bazaar, the First Lady recalled that Trump and his date had come to greet Melania at a table in the VIP section and, despite being on a date with another woman, he asked her for her number.

"He wanted my number, but he was with a date, so of course I didn’t give it to him," she told the outlet.

Clearly unimpressed with the move, she then reportedly told him: "I am not giving you my number; you give me yours, and I will call you.

"I wanted to see if it was a business number. What if it’s business?"

Melania also told GQ that she also 'didn’t know much' about Trump, adding: "I had my life, I had my world. I didn’t follow Donald Trump and what kind of life he had."

Trump responded by offering Melania all his numbers which caught her attention, and she was soon struck by his 'vitality' and 'energy'.

She also opened up about the first meeting in her memoir published last October, titled Melania: A Memoir.

Echoing her sentiments from the Harper's Bazaar interview, Melania explained that she declined Trump's initial number offer and instead asked him to give her his number.

The model ended up calling him a few days after their first meet and eventually the pair went on their first date at his Seven Springs property in Bedford, New York.

She outlined the two attributes of the Republican she was most 'captivated' by at the time.

"From the moment our conversation began, I was captivated by his charm and easygoing nature," the mum-of-one wrote in the memoir.

The pair continued to date and, after several years together, Trump proposed at the 2004 Met Gala.

They then tied the knot the following year at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate before welcoming their first son together, Barron, in 2006.

Before Melania, Trump was married to late Ivana Trump - whose body is buried in Trump's Mar-a-Lago golf course - between 1997 to 1990 and the pair had three children; Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump.

He then married Marla Maples in 1993 before calling it quits in 1999. The pair share one daughter together, Tiffany Trump.
