Justin Trudeau’s ex-wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, has been inundated with praise for the final comments she made as he left office.

After nearly 10 years leading Canada, Trudeau will be replaced as prime minister by former Bank of England governor Mark Carney. Trudeau resigned earlier this year amid a dispute over how to best navigate President Donald Trump’s latest trade tariffs.

Trudeau cited 'internal battles' within his Liberal Party that meant he 'cannot be the best option' in a future election during a press conference back in January.

Taking to Instagram on Monday (10 March), Sophie shared three photos from her ex-husband's farewell speech, alongside the caption: "It’s been quite the journey, hasn’t it?

"Maybe one day I’ll find the words to describe the depth of the experience I had as a simple human, a woman, a non-official First Lady and as a mum raising three kids whose loving father Justin was in full service to his country."

Sophie continued: "When a chapter ends, a new one begins.

"I’m so proud of the hard work the Liberal team has accomplished in all corners of our country and I salute the sacrifices you’ve made in your own lives. I know first-hand what they entail."

Praising their daughter Ella-Grace, Sophie, who shares two other children, Xavier and Hadrien, with her ex-husband, gushed: "You spoke with a solid and grounded presence while introducing dad. Maman can’t be any more proud of your fierce mind and tender heart."

She also offered a 'huge congratulations' to Carney, 'who will continue to shine the light on our truths and the path ahead'.

"The work is far from over and sunny ways persist," Sophie finished up before concluding; "To all my Canadian sisters and brothers (k, I’m weeping now): you offered my family and I so much love and support. Just know…I loved you first!

"Forever in service to all. Sophie."

The post has since been flooded with praise from fans commending Sophie for handling the situation with 'pure class'.

One Instagram user gushed: "Nothing but pure class!! You, your kids, your Husband. CANADA is lucky to have all of you!!"

A second congratulated: "Thank you for everything that you did for our country and you did it with class, poise and elegance. We were proud to call you our First Lady."

And a final person echoed: "What a lovely young daughter you have raised. Great job."

Trudeau and Sophie tied the knot back in 2005 before eventually calling it quits and separating in 2023.
