Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau aims savage five-word dig at US amid Trump's repeated threats

Justin Trudeau has hit headlines this week for firing some not-so-subtle shots at Donald Trump.

The Canadian Prime Minister made an appearance on Thursday night (19 February) at a 4 Nations Faceoff Championship Hockey Game in Boston, where his team boasted an impressive defeat of the US - after which he shared a damning five-word political statement.

Following the 3-2 victory, the 53-year-old shared a statement on social media, simultaneously celebrating the achievement and throwing shade at his presidential neighbour.

"You can’t take our country," Trudeau shared on X (formerly Twitter), in a message which has since received over 206,000 'likes' and 36,000 'retweets'. He continued: "And you can’t take our game,"

For anyone confused by the outgoing leader's passionate statement, it comes after 78-year-old Republican Trump allegedly made a series of comments about turning Canada into America's '51st state'.

According to Team USA boss Bill Guerin - who spoke to The Athletic following the sports game - Trump had issued a threat about his plans for Canada during a call with the American hockey players beforehand.

The controversial president also allegedly referred to his Canadian counterpart as 'Governor Trudeau' during the call.

While these sections were seemingly extracted, Trump's social media platform Truth Social shared a segment of his video chat with Team USA, where the father-of-five can be heard telling them: "You guys are really talented.

"I have great respect for hockey players, I’m a hockey fan. I love hockey. The talent, the skill that you have is crazy."

He added: "Just go out and have a good time tonight. I just want to wish you a lot of luck."

As we say, however, news of Trump's remarks about Canada seemingly got back to Trudeau, who shared his brutal five-word response online.

Despite his powerful stance on the matter, other reports claim that the Canadian PM is less confident about Trump's plans behind the scenes.

According to the New York Post, the father-of-three was caught accidentally voicing his concerns on loudspeaker during a closed-door meeting with business and labor leaders earlier this month, describing Trump's annexing plans as 'a real thing'.

Attendees later told The Daily Beast that Trudeau had inadvertently announced: "I suggest that not only does the Trump administration know how many critical minerals we have, but that may be even why they keep talking about absorbing us and making us the 51st state.

"They’re very aware of our resources, of what we have, and they very much want to be able to benefit from those.

"But Mr. Trump has it in mind that one of the easiest ways of doing that is absorbing our country. And it is a real thing."
