Elon Musk calls US senator ‘a traitor’ for visiting Ukraine amid ongoing tensions

Senator Mark Kelly has since hit back at Musk's comments

Elon Musk has kicked off after US senator Mark Kelly was pictured visiting Kyiv, Ukraine earlier this month.

Musk, who has already made a brutal dig at Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy following the breakdown of communication after Zelenskyy and Trump's meeting last month, has now turned his attentions to US senator Kelly.

Kelly, the Democrat senator for Arizona and a former US navy combat pilot, visited Kyiv for the third time since 2023 and has shown support for Ukraine since it's been under attack by Russia.

After his most recent meeting, he posted to social media: "Just left Ukraine. What I saw proved to me we can’t give up on the Ukrainian people.

"Everyone wants this war to end, but any agreement has to protect Ukraine’s security and can’t be a giveaway to Putin. Let me tell you about my trip and why it’s important we stand with Ukraine."

He continued, sharing thoughts such as calling for security guarantees for Ukraine in future peace deals.

The senator's recent trip to Ukraine was noticed by Musk, who made his thoughts on the move clear.

Musk, who also heads up the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) which supports the Trump administration, replied to Kelly's post, writing: "You are a traitor."

Kelly hasn't taken the insults lying down either, as he responded back to the four-word reply.

Kelly wrote: "Traitor? Elon, if you don't understand that defending freedom is a basic tenet of what makes America great and keeps us safe, maybe you should leave it to those of us who do."

Kelly has also discussed the reply from Musk in a recent interview, as he told reporters Musk is 'obviously not a serious guy' and 'should go back to building rockets'.

The comments come just a week after President Donald Trump halted aid to Ukraine following his bust-up with President Zelenskyy at The White House.

During the meeting of world leaders, Trump and Zelenskyy got into an argument during the heated meeting in the Oval Office last month, with Trump telling Zelenskyy he's 'gambling with World War 3'.

Trump could be heard telling the Ukrainian president: "You either make a deal or we are out.

"Don't tell us what we're going to feel. We're trying to solve a problem. Don't tell us what we're going to feel, because you're in no position to dictate that... You're in no position to dictate what we're going to feel.

"We're going to feel very good and very strong. You're not in a very good position, you've allowed yourself to be in a bad position... you don't have the cards right now... you're gambling with the lives of millions of people.

"You're gambling with World War III!"

Days on from the disastrous meeting, the Trump administration paused all aid to Ukraine.
