Donald Trump claimed that European nations 'want him to lead them' in a bizarre rant at the White House Congressional Ball last night (11 December).

According to The Independent, he wished the crowd a 'Merry Christmas' and a 'Happy Hanukkah' before getting into a long rant about his achievements.

For those who haven't heard of the Congressional Ball, it's an annual event and long-standing White House tradition held during the Christmas season, bringing together lawmakers, administration officials and their families.

He talked about what he claims is a record-breaking investment in the US and even took a swipe at former President Joe Biden.

Trump told attendees: "We have $18 trillion plus already, and I think by the end of the year it’ll be over $20 trillion. That’s more than any nation, anywhere in the world, at any time by quadruple."

He added: "In the previous administration, just to give you a little fact, not to be hostile, they had less than $1 trillion over four years."

However, the moment that went viral online is when the right-wing leader strangely suggested that European nations want him to lead them.

During the speech, Trump said: "European nations are reporting that your president might as well be the leader of the European nations.

"Also they listened to us and they respect us like they've never respected us before so, we're gonna work very hard."

The president added: "We get along with them. We want to get along with as many nations as we can. We've been ripped off by a lot of them for a lot of years."

People have since taken to social media to react to the comments as the clip continues to rack up views online.

One Twitter user penned: "LOL after, idk, 10 trips to France since this guy came to power, every French person I meet says WTF, America?"

While a second agreed: "Same here in the UK. WTAF, America?"

Someone else guessed: "He's reacting to yesterday's news that the majority of Europe views us as a national security threat. He always does this."

Meanwhile, one person from the US joked: "Good. When can we drop him off in Europe?"

And another wrote: "The European nations are not reporting that. He really has Emperor dreams."

It also comes just after Trump criticised European leaders as 'weak' and 'decaying' in a new interview with Politico.

He brutally accused them of failing to control migration and end the Russia-Ukraine war, hinting that he would endorse European political candidates who align with his own vision.

The POTUS said: "I think they’re weak. But I also think that they want to be so politically correct.

"I think they don’t know what to do. Europe doesn’t know what to do."
