Donald Trump has come under fire for a 'gross' comment he made about White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt's lips.

The US President, 79, made the controversial remark at a rally in Pennsylvania on Tuesday (9 December) during a speech that was intended to be about the American economy.

However, he diverged into a number of other topics - one of which being his employee's physical appearance.

For those unfamiliar, Leavitt is the 36th White House press secretary and has been in the role since January - at 28 years old, she's also the youngest person ever to hold the post.

During the event on Tuesday, Trump pointed her out in the crowd to show his appreciation for her with a bizarre comment that's raised eyebrow on social media.

He enthusiastically said: "We even brought our superstar today, Karoline. Isn’t she great? Is Karoline great?," to which the crowd cheered.

Continuing to praise her, Trump added: "You know, when she goes on television, Fox, like, I mean, they dominate, they dominate when she gets up there with that beautiful face.

“And those lips that don’t stop. Pop-pop-pop like a little machine gun. She’s got no fear, and you know why she has no fear? Because we have the right policy."

The choice to comment on her lips and 'beautiful face' has not gone down too well online, with people dubbing it inappropriate for a boss to talk about his younger female employee in this manner.

One Twitter user questioned: "Who says s*** like this about a female that works for him? It’s beyond creepy and gross."

While a second added: "Trump reducing a woman to her looks and the sound of her lips is grotesque, juvenile, and horrifyingly predictable."

And a third chimed in with: "Fairly weird thing to say about your employee/subordinate."

Meanwhile, a fourth wrote: "Trump’s speech was supposed to be about the economy but somehow it’s just…a weird obsession with trans people, a racist word salad, and something about Karoline Leavitt’s lips?? Meanwhile prices aren’t getting any lower."

Ana a fifth added: "This is suppose to be a president, not my president! He needs to stop."

Someone else even said: "I had to turn it off when He said that. She's young enough to be his granddaughter. So grossed out."

And others agreed: "This is just plain disgusting" and "Could he be any creepier and gross! She should be repulsed by his comment."

It's not the first time the Republican leader has come under fire for the way he's spoken to and about women.

It comes just weeks after the whole 'piggy' moment, where the President pointed a finger in a female journalist's face and told her: "Quiet. Quiet piggy."

Unsurprisingly, at the time the was subsequently slammed for his 'misogynistic' remarks, and this latest incident has only added fuel to the fire.

Tyla has contacted the White House for comment.
