Donald Trump's attempt to plant a kiss on wife Melania's face upon his arrival at the Capitol Rotunda today for his inauguration was utterly thwarted by an aspect of her clothing.

Trump was the final politician to be welcomed into the hall today (20 January) following previous presidents, including Bill and Hillary Clinton, George W. and Laura Bush, and Barack Obama.

Outgoing president Joe Biden and former VP Kamala Harris were amongst the final attendees to receive their welcome into the festivities.

Trump's family - including his five children and Melania - were already awaiting him at the time, after which Trump approached them.

The President-elect then attempted to kiss his wife, only to be obstructed by her wide-brimmed hat in a disaster that viewers couldn't help but comment on.

One viewer jibed on X afterwards: "I’ve just realised why Melania is wearing that wide-brimmed hat - it made it impossible for Trump to land his attempted kiss….Smart woman…"

Another noted: "Trump attempting to kiss Melania but the brim of her hat got in the way. That was strange".

"Trump told Melania not to wear that hat. He couldn't kiss her," a third teased.

"All time moment there with Trump trying to give Melania a kiss on cheek without hitting her hat," a fourth penned, while a fifth asked: "Was that an air kiss that Trump gave Melania."

The mother-of-one's black and white get-up had already caused quite the stir online today - particularly with regards to her questionable headwear.

In fact, some viewers watching from home even went as far as to compare her hat to none other than Beyoncé's iconic 'Formation' outfit.

The hit track appeared on the singer's 2016 Lemonade album with the accompanying music video showing Bey rocking a similar wide-brim black hat which also covered a significant amount of her face.

After making the comparison, one fan dubbed Melania as being in 'her Lemonade era'.

"Ok ladies now let's get in formation," chirped a second quoting one of the song's lyrics, while a third likewise quipped: "YALL HATERS CORNY WITH THAT ILLUMINATI MESS."

A fourth echoed: "Not Melania gettin into formation."

"Ok Melania about to get in formation," added a final user.

Previously reflecting on her first time in the role of First Lady, Melania told Fox: "I feel I was always me the first time as well, I just feel that people didn't accept me maybe.

"Maybe some people, they see me as just a wife of the president, but I'm standing on my own two feet, independent. I have my own thoughts."

She continued: "I have my own yes and no. I don't always agree with what my husband is saying or doing. And that's OK."

Elsewhere in the chat, Melania outlined: "My first priority is, you know, to be a mum, to be a First Lady, to be a wife. And once we are in on Jan. 20, you serve the country."
