People are absolutely convinced they know the real reason why Melania Trump wore that very unique hat at her husband Donald Trump's inauguration.

The world watched on yesterday (20 January) as Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States - but it's clear all eyes were on Melania and her statement head accessory.

The second-time First Lady was seen wearing a black and white ensemble - but it was her wide-brimmed hat that really caught the attention of people online.

Trump was the final politician to be welcomed into the Capitol Rotunda hall while his family - five children and Melania - patiently waited for him as he approached.

The 78-year-old, who is the first person convicted of a felony to assume the presidency, then attempted to kiss his wife, 54, only to be obstructed by her wide-brimmed hat in a disaster that viewers couldn't help but comment on.

People online rushed to social media to share their reactions to the seriously 'cringe' moment, with many claiming Melania had an ulterior motive behind donning the headwear other than just making a bold fashion statement.

One X user declared: "Oh, now it makes sense. Melania wore the hat as a barrier to Trump’s lips. Got it."

"For those wondering why Melania chose to wear that goddamn hat, here's your answer", penned a second, sharing a snap of Trump air-kissing Melania due to the hat's wide brim.

A third chimed in: "That hat was the best decision Melania Trump has ever made. Cringiest air kiss ever."

"Melania wore that hat to protect herself from Trump kissing her - very effective!" praised another while a final X user echoed: "The funniest part is that Melania wore a hat that kept him from being able to kiss her."

And that wasn't the only thing people were saying about Melania's hat, as some even compared it to none other than Beyoncé's iconic 'Formation' outfit.

The hit track appeared on the singer's 2016 Lemonade album with the accompanying music video showing Bey rocking a similar wide-brim black hat which also covered a significant amount of her face.

After making the comparison, one fan dubbed Melania as being in 'her Lemonade era'.

"Ok ladies now let's get in formation," chirped a second quoting one of the song's lyrics, while a third likewise quipped: "YALL HATERS CORNY WITH THAT ILLUMINATI MESS."

A fourth commented: "Not Melania gettin into formation."

"Ok Melania about to get in formation," added a final user.
