Barron Trump dragged into Greenland row with bizarre marriage suggestion

White House officials claimed earlier this week that Trump is 'actively' discussing a potential offer to buy the Danish territory

As Donald Trump continues in his controversial plan to 'take over' Greenland, one social media user has suggested a new means of the American leader doing so legally - and it involves his son, Barron.

For those out of the loop, the president has expressed his hopes of attaining the self-governing territory repeatedly since returning to the White House for a second term last January.

After first sending right-hand man JD Vance to Greenland - which is technically situated within the Kingdom of Denmark - in March, Trump went on to insist that attaining the country was necessary for the purposes of 'national security'.

On top of supposedly proving strategic for defence purposes, the 79-year-old also seeks to use Greenland to provide mineral wealth to the US.

"I think that Greenland is very important for the national security of the United States, Europe, and other parts of the free world," Trump claimed this week, adding that he has 'no timeline' for the country's take over.

On Wednesday (7 January) - shortly after the Republican also refused to rule out using military force to take control of the region - White House officials claimed Trump and his officials are 'actively' discussing a potential offer to buy the Danish territory.

Responding, Greenland's prime minister Jens Frederik Nielsen slammed the US' potential takeover as 'fantasy', saying: "When the president of the United States talks about ‘we need Greenland’ and connects us with Venezuela and military intervention, it’s not just wrong. This is so disrespectful."

Danish PM Mette Frederiksen also agreed, vowing: "If the United States chooses to attack another NATO country militarily, then everything stops."

Despite the pushback that Trump has received from European world leaders, a number of onlookers have had their say, some of whom appear to be fighting his corner.

One social media user this week suggested a supposedly 'simple' solution to the problem - marrying Barron Trump off to 18-year-old Princess Isabella of Denmark.

For those unfamiliar with the young royal, Isabella is the oldest daughter of King Frederik X and Queen Mary, and is second in line to the country's throne.

Describing it as a 'diplomatic solution', @cinecitta2030 recommended: "Barron Trump marries Princess Isabella of Denmark and Greenland is given to America as dowry payment."

Unsurprisingly, the suggestion - posted by an account which describes itself in the bio as 'satire' - has gone viral, with a handful of fellow users actually appearing to take it seriously.

"He is handsome and smart, she is beautiful and smart. Sounds like a great deal," one user wrote.

"An elegant solution," a second agreed.

A third went on to tease: "This is how we used to do it."

"Barron needs to take one for the team!" added another.

Some critics, however, have been left horrified by the prospect.

"That is not geopolitics, that is medieval fan-fiction," one hit out. "Greenland is not a bargaining chip, Princess Isabella of Denmark is not a pawn, and Barron Trump is not a diplomatic tool.

"Nations are not exchanged through marriages, this is not the 1400s."

Another continued "We ain't living in the 17th century... So STFU."
