Donald Trump has shared an unexpected five-word message about egg prices as recession fears grow in the United States.

As tariffs tensions rise across the globe with fears of a 'trade war', it's clear many people are seriously worried about growing inflation - especially when it comes to average egg prices which have seen an exponential rise from $4.15 in December to $4.95 in January for a dozen, according to the consumer price index.

Amidst all that, the 78-year-old Republican has reshared an article which features a pretty inflammatory headline - something which many people online are saying means he agrees with the sentiments raised.

What has Trump previously said about egg prices?

Now, during his speech to Congress last week (4 March), Trump blamed the previous president, Joe Biden, for high egg prices, claiming he 'let the price of eggs get out of control'.

"Do a good job on that," he told the Secretary of Agriculture, "You inherited a total mess from the previous administration. Do a good job."

During the rant, Trump failed to mention a link to the high egg prices and a bird flu outbreak in the US.

Egg prices rose under Biden two years ago in 2023 and, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), a dozen eggs averaged over $5 in January which is 53 percent above the average for the whole of 2024.

What was Trump's latest five-word message about egg prices?

On Saturday (8 March), Trump took to his own social media platform, Truth Social, to reshare an article written by right-wing activist Charlie Kirk which was published by the Daily Caller last month (17 February).

The article in question was titled: "Shut Up About Egg Prices - Trump Is Saving Consumers Millions."

The first five words of the headline, 'Shut Up About Egg Prices', have since sparked serious backlash online with many taking to X to share their thoughts on Trump reposting such an article.

One person penned: "What about our families who are struggling with high costs that he's doing nothing about? All we get is 'shut up about the price of eggs'."

"If Biden had retweeted something that said 'shut up about egg prices', every Twitter server would melt within minutes," theorised a second.

A third chimed in: "Currently, Trump is posting articles telling people to 'shut up' about the price of eggs. Apparently, it's of no concern to him, and he's tired of hearing it."

"Donald Trump went from 'we’ll lower prices on day one' to 'shut up about the price of eggs' in less than two months," wrote a fourth, while another echoed: "WOW! Donald Trump just posted an article telling Americans to “Shut up” about egg prices. What happened to lowering costs at the grocery store??? Now Trump wants you to be quiet about it! He’s a total fraud!"

And a final X user added: "'Shut up about eggs prices!' exclaimed the person who campaigned on not shutting up about egg prices."
