The White House has issued a pretty surprising statement after people spotted one particular detail on Donald Trump's hand.

Earlier this week on Monday (24 February), the 78-year-old Republican leader sat down with French president, Emmanuel Macron for a press conference in Washington, in which the latter was forced to fact-check Trump in real time as he tried to push the narrative that Ukraine had taken advantage of US support during its defence against Russia.

During the meeting, which took place on the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the pair shook hands several times, which lead a number of Trump fans to notice something concerning about the president's right hand.

Many people have commented on the 'bruise', which appears to be located on the back of Trump's hand and the alleged make-up that's been used to cover it.

One person wrote on X: "Scrolling Getty and couldn't help but notice this photo of a huge bruise on Trump's hand today."

A second penned: "Some photos over the last few months show bruising on Trump's hand... Always seems to be on the same hand."

A third added: "Trump has a massive bruise on the back of his right hand. How did he get that?"

"Why does Trump have a big bruise on the right hand?" asked another.

"To be fair my grandma also has bruises on her hands at age 79 and has had them for years. It’s just something that happens when you're old and trump is OLD," penned a fifth.

Over on Getty Images, a photograph of the bruise is described as being 'covered in make-up'.

"Makeup covers a bruise on the back of U.S. President Donald Trump's hand as he hosts French President Emmanuel Macron for meetings at the White House," the description reads.

It's not clear what the bruise is related to, but it has been spotted on Trump's hand before and in previous images of the president.

Following the mass speculation online, the White House has now been forced to issue a statement on the matter with press secretary Karoline Leavitt stating: "President Trump is a man of the people and he meets more Americans and shakes their hands on a daily basis than any other president in history.

"His commitment is unwavering, and he proves that every single day."

"President Trump has bruises on his hand because he’s constantly working and shaking hands all day every day," Leavitt added in a follow-up statement.
