Donald Trump has just been awarded the FIFA Peace Prize, the governing body has announced at the 2026 World Cup draw.
The US President became the first-ever recipient of the new prize during today's (Friday 5 December) ceremony in Washington DC.
The prize, which was announced by FIFA last month, was introduced 'to reward individuals who have taken exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace and by doing so have united people across the world,' football's global governing body said in a press release. And Trump being the winner wasn't much of a surprise, as people had guessed he would be the victor since the prize had been announced.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who the Republican leader has formed a close bond with, personally handed the award to Trump during today's draw at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

As per PA Media, the award is a hugely controversial one, with human rights campaigners having urged FIFA earlier this week not to hand the prize to Trump.
“Awarding this prize against a backdrop of escalating attacks on human rights and civil freedoms - including violent detentions of immigrants, crackdowns on freedom of expression, and the militarisation of US cities - underscores the increasing likelihood of the 2026 World Cup being weaponised for authoritarian aims," a joint release on behalf of a number of groups including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International said.
On stage, Trump immediately put on his medal and called it 'one of the great honours of his life' and a 'tremendous honour'.

While Infantino said: “We want to live in a safe world, in a safe environment. We want to unite. That’s what we do today and what we do at the World Cup."
The award was announced in a pre-recorded video, which outlined the US president’s peace efforts. And it seems that the actual moment the award was given out tonight has also sparked backlash, with people describing it as being like a 'comedy skit'.
One Twitter user penned: "The #WorldCup2026 draw looks like the weirdest gameshow ever."

A third and fourth wrote: "Bro created a peace prize just to award himself. What a joker" and "FIFA gave Donald Trump the single most unenthusiastic video awards package I have ever seen."
And a fifth agreed: "FIFA making up a peace prize for Donald Trump is quite possibly the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever witnessed."
Meanwhile, a sixth added: "Honestly such an embarrassing cringe moment."
