Imagine the scene: someone climbs on a chair to reach an unexplored space in their partner's apartment and pulls down a box only to discover it contains their own hair, underwear and items they thought they'd mislaid over the course of their relationship. No this isn't a fictional scene from Netflix stalker series, You, but something that really happened to a real person in RL.
Curiosity got the better of the man when his girlfriend had been acting strangely.
While his girlfriend was out of the room at a university lecture, he stayed behind and had a rummage through the things in her wardrobe out of "boredom".
But what he found hidden in the space above her wardrobe left him feeling "genuinely scared" and unsure of how to proceed.
The unnamed 21-year-old posted on Reddit's Relationship Advice thread to explain the situation he'd found himself in.
And in a scene that sounds like it's come straight out of a thriller, he claims that he found a mysterious cardboard box on top of his girlfriend's wardrobe, which contained a number of items he used to own, including a toothbrush, receipts and boxer shorts.
Sure, those sentimental bits are sweet enough, but mixed in with the tokens of romance were some very bizarre and arguably disgusting items: such as hair, toe nail clippings and even a used condom.
"We have been together for just over a year and we have never had any issues apart from minor arguments that were easily resolved. Up until recently I've never noticed anything strange about her behaviour," he explained.
"A few days ago she left her room at uni to go to a lecture in the morning and left me in there. Up until that day I had never looked through her things as I've never felt the need to.
"Boredom got the better of me and I wanted to see what she was storing. I found a box.
"When I opened it I found so many random things that I used to own. There were odd socks in there that she has taken. A toothbrush that I thought I had lost after our holiday. Bits of hair (presumably) from my comb. Toe nail clippings. Receipts that I assume she stole from my wallet.
"She even has things like empty wrappers of food that I know were mine. There was a piece of glass in there, but I don't know where that is from. A USB phone charger. A half used bar of soap. Boxer shorts. Used gum. Used plasters from God knows when."
The concerned boyfriend explains that the "most worrying" things in the box were a used condom and an antibiotic he was supposed to have taken and he explained he can't understand how she managed to take them.
"I can't remember what else because I just put it back and left. She doesn't know I found it yet," he continued.
"I don't want to confront her about it as she will know I was looking through her things. But then again, what else am I supposed to do? I love her so much but I am genuinely scared."
Redditors were quick to compare the incident to the iconic and chilling scene from the Netflix show, You, starring Penn Badgley.
In the show, the stalker and main character, Joe, is stalking his girlfriend and keeps a creepy box of mementos from their relationship, which includes teeth, her used tampons and her now-murdered ex-boyfriend's smashed phone.
One commented: "I'd say OP should ask his gf to watch You with him. Film her reaction please. 100% sure she'll freak out."
Other people said he should confront the woman or break up with her.
When the OP denied he was being stalked someone commented: "She could still have an unhealthy obsession or stalk you in the rare moments you're not together. Some people are really good at hiding shit. Don't dismiss this, man. Confront her."
A few users suggested that she could identify as a witch and revealed that some of the items from the box could be used to frame him in a crime.
Someone said: "As a witch I agree that he should book it if she's practicing. My husband knows my beliefs and I'd never hoard his stuff to do magic on him, especially without his consent. No matter if she's a witch or just has a weird "memory" box, the things she's kept indicate some level of creepy issues going on."
Another said: "Was it by any chance a lecture in celular [sic] biology and genomics? She's trying to clone you and make GMO babies. Check her online searches, see if she researched eugenics and artificial placentas."
To which the OP added: "Her degree is biotechnology haha"
What would you do in this situation? Do you think he should confront her and leave or just carry on as normal?
