Sussex Teens Wake Up On Flight To Barcelona After Night Out

Teenage pals, Tara and Jack, went to Gatwick Airport for a drunken McDonald's - and woke up on a flight to Catalonia

Most teens who over do it on a night out wake up on their bathroom floor spooning the toilet with sick in their hair, but two Sussex teenagers ended up in Barcelona after a boozy night out got out of hand and they went to get food.

Student Tara Hammersley, 19, and best friend Jack Messer, also 19, were enjoying a night out in Crawley when they made the classic booze-fuelled decision to go to McDonald's. The nearest branch? Gatwick airport.

But when they got there, retail-worker Jack, who was a little worse for wear, made the snap decision to book two tickets to Barcelona.

Tara, who studies psychology at Nottingham Trent University, claims she can't remember being at the airport and only woke up as the plane began to descend into Spain (now that's what you call a post-drinking downer).

The spontaneous duo spent four days in the Spanish city with no luggage and Tara having no money or clothes, apart from the outfit she had been wearing on the OG night.

Jack explained: "We decided, as Tara was in need of some food, to head to Gatwick Airport for a cheeky McDonald's. It's only 15 minutes away from the club and it was the easiest place to go for food.

"But as soon as we saw the planes, we decided to check out SkyScanner. That's when I decided to book our flight to Barcelona for a little spontaneous holiday."

The pair - feeling a little spontaneous because of the drink - found the cheapest Skyscanner deal and settled on Barcelona as their destination of choice.

"Apparently when we got to the airport we decided it would be a great idea to go on holiday, we nearly went to Morocco," Tara added.

"I don't remember this but Jack filled me in - the last thing I remember was being sick in the club toilets.

"When I woke up on the flight I had no idea where I was - my initial thought was I had died and was on my way to heaven.

"After asking Jack multiple times where we are, he finally remembered we were going to Barcelona.

"I just said, oh my god what have we done, and eventually laughed it off."

The intoxicated pair's journey almost ended before it began as flight attendants wanted to refuse them entry to the plane because they were drunk.

Tara admitted: "They nearly didn't let us on the flight as we were that drunk.

"I have no idea how we made it through airport security and on to the plane but somehow it happened."

The flight wasn't the end of their problems. When they arrived in Barcelona, Tara had no money, clothes or cards - just what she'd taken on the night out.

"Thankfully Jack had his card so I had to use that for the whole trip - we also had no clothes apart from what we wore to the club that night. I had on a shiny, silver bodycon dress - not the best outfit to travel in.

"We had to buy some clothes and borrow some clothes off some friends we made at the hostel we were staying in.

"We decided to stay in Barcelona for a couple of days and try to make the most out of our drunken mistake.

"We spent most of the time chilling out on the beach and going out drinking at night. All in all we had a good holiday although I'm hoping that this doesn't happen again - my mum has confiscated my passport since!"
