Popular deodorant brand issues apology as several customers reported 'agonising' side effects from products

Customers have reported suffering painful side effects including rashes, 'chemical burns' and 'weeping spots'

A popular deodorant brand has been forced to issue an apology after users began suffering from painful rashes and burns under their armpits.

When you're applying a roll-on, the last thing you expect to happen is for your skin to get all red and inflamed, and as one social media user put it, 'your armpits viciously attacked'.

But that's exactly what's happened to a whole horde of people in recent weeks, who have taken to TikTok, Reddit, and other sites, to report their 'agonising symptoms'.

And the culprit? Mitchum's 48-hour roll-on anti-perspirant and deodorant.

The brand has responded with an official apology and explanation, after flocks of users came forward with their experiences of burning red pits.

As reported by the BBC, one customer claimed she was unable to sleep due to the 'second degree chemical burns,' while another said she was left in agony because of 'weeping spots' under her arm.

She defiantly added that she 'won't be using any Mitchum products again' as she doesn't want to risk the reaction again.

After more and more people came forward to say they'd been affected by the issue, Mitchum addressed the problem and posted an official statement on Instagram.

They explained that the irritation was coming from 'selected batches of Mitchum 48-hour 100ml Roll On' sold in the UK, Ireland and South Africa.

The company wrote: "We are sorry to those who were impacted and for the time it took to complete the investigation.

"Now that we're clear, we want to share what happened. While the formula hasn't changed, a change in the manufacturing process of one of our raw materials altered how the product interacts with the skin in some consumers. That change didn't meet our standards, or yours."

They continued: "We've gone back to the original process to make sure current and future batches meet the high standards you expect from us."

Mitchum added that the issue is 'limited to a small number of batches' and they want to make it as 'easy as possible' for these to be identified.

"The affected products can be recognised by their batch numbers, which are printed at the bottom of the pack."

In their Instagram post, the company also outlined all of the numbers to look out for, which includes a variety of both men's and women's roll-on deodorants.

However, the outrage has continued in their comments section, where furious users have continued to speak up about what happened to them.

One user claimed: "Finally you’ve made a statement about it. This doesn’t take away from the fact that I’ve literally been left with scarring.

"I’m sure many others have too. “Temporary irritation” is an absolute joke, irritation is not the word. Try burns, blisters, scabs, now scars. I’ll never buy another Mitchum product again."

A second questioned: "I've been so sore for weeks thinking it was a shaving rash, so what do i do if I'm affected?"

While a third wrote: "I literally had chemical burns! I thought it was just me!!!!!"

And a fourth penned: "Literal burns and scabs are NOT temporary irritation! I had to sleep with a damp cloth under my armpits?!!"

The Mitchum UK team responded to some of the comments, writing that 'regarding compensation' they want to 'win back the trust' of their customers, so, if you have experienced any issues, you can reach out to their Customer Care team who will 'make it right'.

They have also since issued advice to those who are suffering, writing in a new Instagram post: "We advise those experiencing issues to stop using any anti-perspirant, as prolonged usage may affect how long the irritaion lasts. If symptoms persist or worsen, we advise that you seek medical attention."

Mitchum are currently working with retailers to get the affected batches off the shelves.
