Kate Middleton has reacted after King Charles III announced she would become the first royal to inherit Princess Diana’s title.

The new King made the announcement as he addressed the nation for the first time today (9 September), following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday.

During his speech, Charles shared the news that his eldest son, Prince William, would be taking over the Scottish titles which have 'meant so much' to Charles, becoming the new Prince of Wales.

“He succeeds me as Duke of Cornwall and takes on the responsibilities for the Duchy of Cornwall which I have undertaken for more than five decades," the King explained.

“Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, the country whose title I have been so greatly privileged to bear during so much of my life and duty."

King Charles went on to reveal that William's wife, Kate, would also assume a new title as he continued: "With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given."

The news marks the first time the Princess of Wales title has been given to a member of the royal family since Princess Diana held the title through her marriage to Prince Charles, who she divorced in 1996. One year after the couple split, Princess Diana passed away.

Following Charles' speech today, a royal source told the Mirror that William and Kate were 'focused on deepening the trust and respect of the people of Wales over time'.

"The Prince and Princess of Wales will approach their roles in the modest and humble way they’ve approached their work previously," they continued, before revealing Kate's response to the news as they said: "The new Princess of Wales appreciates the history associated with this role but will understandably want to look to the future as she creates her own path.”

King Charles also made reference to Prince Harry and Meghan during his address, saying: "I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas."

Kate was seen driving in Windsor today (9 September), after Prince William and Prince Harry travelled to the Queen's Balmoral estate in Scotland to be with Her Majesty following the news of her ill health.
