Kate Middleton broke royal tradition at King's coronation

There are all sorts of traditions being carried out at the coronation of King Charles III, but Kate Middleton has defied one of them with her outfit choice.

Charles is officially made King today (6 May), with celebrations in London in full swing as His Majesty and his wife, Queen Camilla, undergo the ceremony at Westminster Abbey following a procession from Buckingham Palace.

Prince Williams' wife, Kate, is among those watching the events unfold, and many fans of the royal family might have expected her to mark the fancy occasion by wearing a tiara.

Such sparkling accessories have typically been worn by women in the royal family at similar events in the past, with Lauren Kiehna, writer of The Court Jeweller, telling People: "Tiaras were worn by nearly every royal lady at the Queen's coronation in 1953, as well lots of aristocratic women but times have certainly changed in 70 years."

Kiehna noted that there was a particular excitement surrounding the chance to wear jewels when Queen Elizabeth II took the throne in 1953, as the huge event had come off the back of World War II.

Author Lady Anne Glenconner, who worked as one of the former Queen's six maids, explained: "No one had worn their jewellery or tiaras during the war. People were queuing to have their tiaras, which were like great fenders of diamonds, stomachers and necklaces cleaned."

While tiaras might not be quite as popular this time around, Kate has defied the tradition as she decided to leave the classic style of bejewelled headband behind.

Instead she opted for a silver headpiece, which features a number of sequinned leaves to form a small crown over her head. Her daughter, Princess Charlotte, is wearing a similar, smaller version of the headband.

Speculation about Kate's accessory of choice has been ongoing for some time ahead of the coronation, with The Times having previously revealed her potential plans to wear a 'floral headpiece'.

If you're a fan of The Devil Wears Prada, you might not be too impressed. "Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking."

But Kate is no stranger to a floral design, and has previously been spotted out and about wearing hats or fascinators decorated with floral decorations.

If you're still looking to get your fill of more dazzling headwear then you can instead turn to the new King and Queen, who are the proud new owners of shiny crowns as they take on their new royal roles.
