A man has been arrested after allegedly drugging his girlfriend with four abortion pills in order to induce a miscarriage.

Emerson Evans, who hails from Illinois, US, has been charged with two counts of intentional homicide of an unborn child, according to a press release shared by Bloomington police.

Officers were called to a home in Bloomington last Friday (22 August) at around 7 pm when they found a pregnant woman suffering a medical emergency.

Investigators later determined that Evans, 31, had administered abortion pills without the woman's consent to cause her to miscarry.

She was seven weeks pregnant when she suffered the miscarriage, IPM Newsroom reports.

Evans is reported to have inserted four Mifepristone pills into his girlfriend’s vagina - a pill which is meant to be taken orally, with the recommended dose being just one pill.

While abortion is legal in Illinois, the intentional homicide of an unborn child carries a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison for each count.

"We are again saddened by the alleged criminal actions which resulted in harm to others," Police Chief Jamal Simington said in a statement. "It is my hope the mother involved in the matter fully recovers and has the resources and support of this strong community in the future.

"The officers and detectives worked diligently and honourably through this very tough investigation."

The incident currently remains under investigation.

"Frankly, the number of pills demonstrates a lack of knowledge or consent," Judge Amy McFarland said at the court hearing.

Evans sought to 'effectuate his beliefs of what should occur in the absence of consent. That involved taking a life', McFarland told IPM.

He told police he 'made the decision' for his girlfriend, the judge noted.

Sadly this isn't an isolated incident.

Back in July, Scottish paramedic Stephen Doohan was jailed for 10 years and six months after he inserted an abortion drug into a woman’s vagina without her knowledge during consensual sex.

And, earlier this month, a Texas woman, who is not being named in the media, sued both an abortion pill supplier and her ex-boyfriend who she claims terminated her pregnancy with drugs he obtained from the group.

She claimed the US Marine impregnated her and then pressured her to take the pills from the service for weeks, even though she didn't want an abortion.

The victim alleged that the man secretly dissolved at least 10 abortion pills into a cup of hot chocolate that he made for her, before leaving the house and refusing to respond as she began bleeding, reports NBC News.

She was eight weeks pregnant at the time and, within 30 minutes of consuming the drink, the suit says, the woman began haemorrhaging and cramping.

The victim's three children were sleeping upstairs, so she asked the man to pick up her mother and drive her over to come and watch them, while he drove her to the emergency room.

However, she claims he became unreachable, and instead, she had to turn to a neighbour for help.

At around 12:30am, she texted the man saying: "I am gushing blood. Please hurry."

He apologised and said he had to catch a flight the next day. Instead, the neighbour drove her to the hospital, where her unborn baby tragically did not survive.

When she returned home, the woman claims she found an open box of abortion pills and a pill bottle in her home.
