Brits urgently warned about new travel rules coming into force this weekend

European jet-setters are advised to take note of the legislation change ahead of their flights

All holidaymakers travelling from the UK and European airports are set to be impacted by a brand new set of regulations coming into effect from Sunday.

Starting from September 1, plane passengers jetting off from airports such as Manchester, Amsterdam and Munich will face tougher restrictions on their hand luggage.

The call comes after the European Union announced plans to regulate and create uniformity where plane travel is concerned.

You may or may not be aware but up until now, individual airlines have been allowed to dictate the weight and size of cabin bags.

But from Sunday, that practice will be a thing of the past as a new standardisation on the weight and dimension of cabin bags is being ushered in.

Furthermore, the EU has announced a change to liquid limits and it’s worth checking out what does and doesn’t constitute.

What is the new hand luggage legislation?

New EU rules governing cabin baggage state you may bring one cabin bag, weighing no more than 10kg, onto a plane.

The maximum dimensions (inclusive of handles and wheels) are 55 x 40 x 20cm.

You are also permitted to bring a small personal item on board, including handbags, backpacks and laptop cases.

These must be no larger than 40 x 30 x 15cm.

If you’ve travelled on a flight anywhere over the last two decades, then you’ll be aware that a strict 100ml liquid legislation has been in play.

This is because, in 2006, authorities foiled a transatlantic aircraft terror plot where liquid explosives were disguised as soft drinks.

Since then, plane passengers have not been allowed to carry items higher than 100ml in their hand luggage.

However, some airports across Europe recently scrapped the rule due to the installation of Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB) in some terminals.

These 3D scanners, initially approved by the Aviation Society, allowed passengers to carry a higher volume of liquids than previously outlined.

In June 2024, UK airports reverted to the 100ml rule and now all airports across Europe are doing the same.

As of September 1, passengers are prohibited from carrying items containing more than 100ml of liquid in their cabin bags.

These items cannot total more than one litre when combined and must be placed inside a clear, resealable bag roughly measuring 20 x 20cm.

How long will the new legislation be enforced?

The EU’s new rules will be enforced from Sunday, September 1 and are expected to remain in play until otherwise stated.

It is also presumed they will be in play until otherwise stated.

The union claims this standardisation is ‘necessary’, but that rules could eventually be changed in the future.
