Ellen Greenberg’s family speak out after her controversial death was ruled a suicide again despite 20 stab wounds

An attorney for Ellen Greenberg's family has hit out at the new findings and branded them an 'insult'

Ellen Greenberg's parents' attorney has blasted the medical examiner's recent review of her death after it was once again ruled a suicide.

In January 2011, Greenberg, a 27-year-old Philadelphia schoolteacher, was found dead in her locked apartment after she returned home early from work due to a snowstorm. She was found by her fiancé, Sam Goldberg, with 20 stab wounds to her back, neck, and head, as well as a knife found protruding from her chest.

As per People, Greenberg's death was initially ruled a homicide by Dr Marlon Osbourne, a Philadelphia medical examiner who performed her original autopsy.

However, he later changed his ruling to suicide, and since the death was no longer being treated as a crime, her apartment was cleaned by a professional crew.

Since the controversial suicide ruling, Greenberg's parents, Joshua and Sandy, have been fighting to change the verdict back or change it to 'undetermined,' as they think the investigation was botched.

Fast-forward to today, in February, the city of Philadelphia settled two lawsuits from the schoolteacher's parents and agreed to pay the grieving family $600,000 with a promise to expeditiously review her cause of death.

That new review has now taken place and was conducted by Philadelphia's Chief Medical Examiner, Dr Lindsay Simon. However, to the dismay of her parents, it has once again been ruled that Greenberg died by suicide.

According to People, Simon included in her findings: "While the distribution of injuries is admittedly unusual, the fact remains that Ellen would be capable of inflicting these injuries herself."

The medical examiner further said that many of the wounds 'could be classed as hesitation wounds' and that there is 'no evidence she was 'incapacitated' when they were inflicted'.

Other details included in the report include a lack of DNA evidence on the knife and no signs of a struggle at the scene, as well as the fact that she was reportedly suffering from anxiety at the time of her death and had recently switched medication.

In a statement to CBS News Philadelphia, Greenberg's parents' attorney, Joe Podraz, has slammed the review as 'deeply flawed' and 'an insult to Ellen and her family'.

He said: "It includes false claims - like the assertion that a stab wound in Ellen's spinal column was made during autopsy, a theory rejected by every credible expert, including the City's own neuropathologist.

"By ignoring key evidence that contradicts suicide—the extensive 3D photogrammetry, a recreation which proves Ellen could not self-inflict all of the wounds, unexplained bruises, missing surveillance footage, an intact lock, accounts of a toxic relationship, etc.—Simon builds a flimsy case on distorted portrayals of Ellen's mental health, propped up by cynical distortions of Ellen's managed anxiety, a condition widely experienced daily by over 40 million Americans. Shame on you Simon."

He added: "Ellen's family just wanted the truth. It is clear that the truth will not come from Philadelphia's law enforcement machinery.

"Though Ellen's city turned its back on her, we will continue through other avenues to get justice for her murder, by any means necessary."

Speaking to People, the attorney continued: "People who are not as familiar with the story must understand that this report omits facts, misstates facts and provides no context where some is needed.

"Simon’s so-called ‘independent review' of Ellen Greenberg’s death is a deeply flawed attempt to justify a predetermined conclusion."
