One of the three viruses spreading in multiple countries has been dubbed the 'bleeding eye virus' because of one of the most serious symptoms.

'Bleeding eye virus' is a name given to Marburg, 'severe hemorrhagic fever that can cause serious illness and death' as per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Survival can be improved by early detection and rehydration, though there are currently no official treatment or vaccine for it.

The CDC state that symptoms to look out for are fever, chills, headaches, a rash with flat and raised bumps, and a sore throat.

The Cleveland Clinic adds that due to its hemorrhagic nature, it 'damages blood vessels and causes bleeding', which can occur from the eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina.

Travel Health Pro reported on 30 September, the World Health Organization stated that 'cases were reported from 7 of the 30 districts in the country: Gasabo, Gatsibo, Kamonyi, Kicukiro, Nyagatare, Nyarugenge and Rubavu districts'.

"Among the confirmed cases, over 70% were healthcare workers from two health facilities in the capital city of Kigali."

In Rwanda, there have been 66 illnesses and 15 deaths, the CDC states. No cases outside of Rwanda have been confirmed, and it's believed that contracting the virus in the United States is low risk.

PEOPLE reports that Marburg is 'spread through contact with Egyptian rousette bats, or by contact with infected individuals.'

"Whilst MVD is rare and very unusual in travellers, sporadic cases have been reported in travellers who spent prolonged periods in mines or caves inhabited by bat colonies," Travel Health Pro add.

Two other viruses that are spreading are Mpox and Oropouch, the latter of which is referred to as 'sloth fever'.

Mpox is spread by way of two viruses. According to the CDC, they are 'Clade I and Clade II. Clade I is spreading in Africa, Canada, Europe.'

On 15 November, a case of Mpox was discovered in California and could be linked back to the outbreak in Africa. There have been 21,000 confirmed cases of Mpox since January.

It can be transmitted by contact with contaminated objects or infected people.

The CDC say that Oropouch is transmitted by 'biting midges and some mosquitoes', and while most recover quickly, 1 in 20 will develop a more serious disease as a result.

Symptoms include 'sensitivity to light, dizziness, pain behind the eyes, nausea, vomiting, and rash,' and some may experience bleeding, encephalitis or meningitis.
