Woman says her mother-in-law tried to change her baby's name after 'inviting herself' to the birth

Woman says her mother-in-law tried to change her baby's name after 'inviting herself' to the birth

The wife has threatened to cut off her mother-in-law if she doesn't change her behaviour

A woman has claimed she was branded an 'a**hole' after her mother-in-law welcomed herself into the birth of her grandson and attempted to change his name.

The frustrated mum took to Reddit to vent about the altercation with her mother-in-law following the arrival of her son, who she and her husband had agreed to name after her father.

She explained that she was 'very close' to her dad, who had passed away when she was just 14, so they chose his name for their son's first name, and the husband's grandfather's name for his middle name.

As they prepared to welcome the newborn, the wife found that the mother-in-law was 'giving her opinion on everything' for their baby.

That apparently even extended to the opinion that she should be there when he was born, as the woman explained: "The day I was due, I only wanted [my] husband there. He drove me to the hospital and [my mother-in-law] walks into the room and starts babbling on about the baby's name, feeding schedules, etc."

The wife said she 'kept it together' as best as she could, but she couldn't contain her frustrations any more when the mother-in-law began 'trying to talk [the] husband into convincing' the wife to change their son's name.

With apparently no luck on that front, the mother-in-law then attempted another tactic.

"She asked the nurses if she could legally change his name," the woman wrote, adding: "She even went as far as to accuse me of controlling [my] husband into his name."

Following this accusation, the wife said she 'yelled' at her mother-in-law to 'get out of the room' and insisted she and her husband would 'not be changing' their son's name.

The mother-in-law, however, has been 'telling family members a different story'.

Thankfully the husband has been 'sticking up' for his wife and insisting that they won't be changing their son's name, and the couple have decided that if the mother-in-law continues with her actions they will be 'cutting her off from seeing her grandson'.

"Now, most of her side of the family are calling me names and demanding I apologize to [my mother-in-law]. She has texted me a few times calling me an AH [a**hole]."

The wife questioned whether her mother-in-law was right, but she was met with numerous supportive comments arguing that parents have the right to name their children whatever they like.

"Oh hell no!" one person wrote, adding: "She had her chance to name the kid when she had her own. She doesn't have naming rights to your child(ren). If she doesn't like it, she can suck a lemon."

Given the parents' plans to cut her off if she doesn't stop, the mother-in-law probably will have to 'suck a lemon', indeed.
