A woman has been slammed by her mother for being in a DINK relationship as the controversial relationship trend has been explained.

It seems as though mums always have big opinions that they like to be heard, but when it comes to the subject of relationships, they may as well be holding a megaphone.

One woman shared her experience of this, after revealing to her mum that she would quite like her relationship to be 'DINK' forever.

'DINK' relationships are becoming more and more popular as women are moving to become more career-focused.

But what happens when your life choices clash with the plans that your mum had mapped out for you?

What is a 'DINK' relationship?

First of all, let's establish exactly what it means.

'DINK' is an acronym for 'dual income no kids', meaning it's a relationship with two wages coming into a household, with no kids to spend it on (out of choice).

Some people decide to be 'DINKS' in their early twenties, but for some, it's a life they envision for the foreseeable future.

And when you're getting your full eight hours sleep a night and date nights every week, it's easy to see why some people would choose this life.

Why are DINK relationships so controversial?

'DINKS' have gotten a rough ride for many different reasons.

They are quite often labelled as selfish or materialistic, delusional, and many more hurtful descriptives.

One woman shared her experience of such on Reddit. After a decade of being with her partner, the two decided that they didn't want children or to ever get married.

Upon breaking this news to her mum, she was met with the view that she just may as well stay single and 'enjoy' her life.

She also suggested that couples with no children have 'no chance' of staying together, as they are not connected by anything.

People in the comments were quick to share their thoughts.

One person said: "I don’t mean to hate on your mum, but I absolutely despise that 'logic'.

"My husband and I have together for ten years.

"I don’t know that there’s anything in particular we do to 'make it last' that others with kids don’t do (past sleeping more haha), but I do know it leaves a lot more time for fun, which I think is a huge factor that couples with kids lack.

"We are able to relax together, travel, communicate freely and whenever we want."

Another added: "If you love each other and both stay invested in your relationship, it will last."
