A woman has hit back after being told she has no 'self-respect' for proposing to her boyfriend.

Popping the question is meant to be a rather magical moment, though it doesn't all go to plan for some couples.

And last year, Sukhmin Garcha found out that the internet can be a rather cruel place after her proposal video went viral.

Still, the skin educator who lives in Vancouver, Canada, and her now husband, Shiraz Brar, have decided to rise above it.

A video of the couple's special moment went viral back in 2022, with some suggesting that Shiraz didn't seem happy that Sukhmin was proposing to him.

Comments ranged from asking the absolute boss if her knee was hurting, to other women saying they'd rather 'hoover the ocean' than propose to a man.

But Sukhmin tries not to let it faze her, and honestly, anyone getting upset about who proposes to who clearly doesn't have enough going on in their own life.

Still, the soon-to-be bride has since spoken out about her experience and said that while she was 'nervous' about proposing, she 'was always open' to it.

Sukhmin's proposal video went viral.

It was just a matter of 'want[ing] to find the right moment to do it', and she settled on a beautiful waterside moment.

And, for anyone suggesting that her proposal didn't go down well with her boyfriend, Sukhmin was quick to fire back: "It didn't cause any issues personally.

"My boyfriend had the biggest smile on his face. Our families were really supportive and happy about it. My mom was really proud," she said.

"Honestly, I would say just do it! If the both of you are on the same level of investment in the relationship, it's a no brainier. "Just because not a lot of people have done it, doesn't mean it's wrong.

"These are just outdated gender roles made by the society, We're the new generation, and we can definitely build a new society where gender roles don't exist."

Thankfully, her family were more than supportive, which have helped drown out hateful comments from trolls.

The woman has since hit back at the trolls.

"My friends and family loved it. I received some hate on TikTok though but very little compared to the positive comments.

"I received plenty of negative comments. A lot of them were 'I would rather die' or 'she has no self-respect,' 'he doesn't look happy' and the list goes on.

"A lot of the hate came from females, which was very surprising. It was interesting to see how men supported women proposing.

"In our society we always want equality but because of cultural bias, there is always resistance.

"I genuinely believe we need to break through these norms and live life to its full potential."
