A man has spoken out after losing his fiancée just moments after proposing to her.

On 6 July, Nizamettin Gursu got down on one knee to his girlfriend Yesim Demir at Polente Cape in Çanakkale, north-west Turkey.

Demir and Gursu met a year ago, according to Turkish newspaper Sabah.

After proposing to her, the pair walked up a cliff planning to drink some alcohol have a picnic while watching the sunset but their celebrations were brought to a horrific and heartbreaking end before they had even begun.

On the day of the proposal, Gursu said he went to collect the picnic from the car when he suddenly heard a scream.

Racing back, he discovered his fiancée had vanished and running over to the edge of cliff, saw she had tumbled off.

Gursu told local media: "We chose it to have a romantic memory after the proposal. We drank some alcohol.

"Everything happened at once. She lost her balance and fell down."

The pair were in Çanakkale, a city in north-west Turkey.

Demir fell a total of 104 feet (32 metres) and miraculously survived the fall.

Gursu fled back down the cliff to rush to Demir's aid, calling medical services on his way.

Sadly, the 39-year-old was pronounced dead by paramedics following 45 minutes of them attempting to resuscitate her.

According to Turkish media outlet Hürriyet, District Gendarmerie Command teams escorted people away from the area at around 9:30pm.

Authorities immediately launched an investigation into the 39-year-old's death.

As of 15 July, people were allowed back onto the cliff but in a 'controlled manner'.

Demir fell over 100 feet.

One of Demir's friends told a local outlet: "This is a place where everyone comes and watches the sunset. However, the roads are very bad and there is no precaution on the edge of the cliff. "A fence should be drawn here, precautions should be taken."

In the UK, another couple's hopes and dreams to marry were similarly tragically ripped away from them.

Rebecca Foster, 32, and her fiancé Kieran Naylor, 33 from Daresbury were together 10 years, had moved in together, were renovating their home and planning their dream wedding in Cyprus for 2024.

On 12 December, 2022 they were both rushed to hospital after a fire started in their house, where they both sadly passed away - Rebecca on 14 December and Kieran on Boxing Day.

Kieran and Rebecca's families said they were the 'perfect couple' who were planning on spending 'the rest of their lives together'.

They resolved: "Kieran and Rebecca are now reunited forever and they will always be in our hearts."
