We're less than two weeks away until the big day and I'll bet on it that many of us are still frantically trying to sort last-minute presents for our loved ones.

Whether it's something cheap and cheerful for a workplace secret Santa, something a little more sentimental for a best friend or something beyond perfect for your significant other - it's clear, for many of us, there is no greater joy than showing those around us with carefully thought-out gifts.

However, due to exactly that, it's very easy to go overboard when shopping for your partner so, to help you out in the cashola department, experts have revealed how much money you should actually be spending on your partner this Christmas as the UK average has now been revealed.

CouponBirds, a website shoppers use to find coupons, surveyed 2,000 adults last year to find out exactly how much wonga they splashed on their partners when it came to buying prezzies for the occasion.

On average, they discovered that people spent £144.37 on gifts for their partners.

Interestingly, that number is a whole £15 less than the amount participants said they spent on their close family members, which was a still hefty £128.49.

According to the study, blokes were far more likely to spend a sizeable amount more, with an average spend of £178.81, compared to women who spent £125.77 on average.

In terms of age demographics, those aged between 35 to 44 years old were the age group most likely to spend the most for the big day, averaging a very generous £165.71.

Meanwhile, 18-24 year olds, who inevitably have the least spending power for a number of reasons, averaged as the lowest spenders with just £105.22.

However, across all age groups, 2% were shockingly prepared to spend over £400.

And when it came to what they anticipated in return gift-wise, the survey found that, on average, the respondents expected their partner to spend £137.66 - which is around a tenner less than what they'd fork out themselves.

With all that said though, 75% of people after taking part in the study agreed that more meaningful gifts are more important than the money spent on them, with 38% strongly agreeing.

So, while it's nice to shower your loved ones on Christmas - it's nice to know it truly is 'the thought that counts' at the end of the day.
