It may be tragic, but despite being in our mid-20s, we can say with confidence that we haven't received a gesture even half as romantic as the one seven-year-old Harley gave to his school girlfriend this week.

The little boy, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, was "devastated" when his year 3 girlfriend broke up with him, and made it his mission to get her back.

Harley's mum Stefania, 26, told the heartwarming story to Tyla.

"My little boy Harley has had a 'girlfriend' since year 2. He's now in year 3," she says. "They're a little team in school and Harley talks about her a lot. This little girl also writes Harley little notes.

"My son is awaiting assessments for autism and ADHD, so school can be extremely challenging for him.

"Unfortunately, this week Harley got a bit angry with his new teacher and it upset his 'girlfriend'. She didn't like his attitude, so she dumped Harley."

Stefania said Harley came out of school that day with his eyes brimming with tears and "absolutely devastated".

"He was so upset and very quiet," recalls his mum. On the way home, Stefania began brainstorming ideas with Harley about how they could make it better, offering suggestions like writing a letter and making a picture for her.

"He said 'No, I want to speak to her myself in my own words', so I suggested some flowers and maybe a chocolate bar. He seemed to perk up a little but he told me he was still upset, so I said I'd cook him his favourite dinner (pie and mushy peas)."

Stefania continued: "When we got to the shop and he was so excited to pick her the flowers and he specifically picked the bunch of flowers he chose because it had a rose in it.

"That night Harley sat with me and came up with a 'plan' for the morning. He wanted me to set my alarm for 5am, then we'd eat breakfast quick, get dressed, brush his teeth shiny, put his best spray on and do his hair really nice, then set off a bit early for school so we don't miss her.

"The following morning, we got to school and Harley was a bit nervous. He didn't want to stand in his line at school because he was waiting around for this little girl. Unfortunately she was a few minutes late and Harley had to go into school. He made me promise him that I would bring the flowers and chocolate back after school."

Crying yet? No? Well brace yourself.

Stefania continued: "That school day must have been the longest school day of his little life. He came running out of school with the biggest smile on his face and grabbed the flowers and chocolate bar and gave them to the little girl.

"She gave him the biggest hug ever, and he was absolutely over the moon that they are 'boyfriend and girlfriend' again. They kept hugging each other and Harley kept saying it was the best day ever."
