We have all seen debates on how to make the best cup of tea and now a woman a sparked another tea related debate - what is the best type of tea.

Melissa Amateis, who goes by the username WW2HistoryGal on Twitter, asked her five thousand followers what the best kind of British tea is. "Ok, UK followers, what is the best kind of British tea? I want to start drinking it and need to know what to try," she posted on Tuesday.

Little did Melissa know, her innocent question led to a very intense debate. Who knew how much Twitter users loved a cuppa?

One Twitter user suggested PG Tips with oat milk which led to a debate within itself, with one commenter replying: "How do I report this for misinformation."

Another account, who admitted they were not a tea expert, said: "Twinings, PG Tip, Yorkshire, Tetley are the most popular tea brands, the kind commonly used with milk and sugar in an ordinary British cup of tea."

Lots of tea drinkers came out in support of Yorkshire Tea (

Under this comment there was a lot of support for Yorkshire Tea, one tea drinker penned: "I drink gallons of tea, and my favourite by far is Yorkshire Tea."

They added: "I don't like any 'fancy' teas at all, not eve Earl Grey, which is much loved by many Brits."

A fourth concurred: "Yes! Yorkshire Gold is the most excellent variety of all."

While one tea fan posted a picture of a Yorkshire Tea box and said: "Other answers are incorrect."

There were also lots of suggestions on the best way to brew each tea brand. One Yorkshire Tea fan shared: "If you are making it in [a] teapot, steep tea for a minute first. Then pour on top of milk. If you are making tea directly in the mug, then steep the teabag in hot water first for up to 1 min, then remove bag and add milk."

Some responses suggested pricier options, one Twitter user wrote: "Sorry but it has to be Earl Grey. The very best tea, any variety, is from Fortnum & Mason. But very pricey so best kept for high days and holiday."

In other tea related news, on Tuesday it was revealed that Britain is at risk of a major tea shortage due to extreme changes in weather brought on by climate change. The weather changes are threatening to destroy stocks of tea in India, Sri Lanka, China and Kenya.

So, who's going to put the kettle on?
